\u201cWhen there\u2019s lots of limitations, I like it because you have to have more creativity,\u201d says Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer in this video, describing his images that capture life inside the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of North Korea. De Keyzer was one of very few to have been given unprecedented access to sites in the country, including Pyongyang\u2019s Science and Technology Complex \u2013 where hundreds of children gather in \u2018pioneer dress\u2019, the communist youth uniforms they wear to school.<\/p>\n
He was also allowed to photograph the city\u2019s Mansudae Grand Monument \u2013 albeit under heavy restrictions. \u201cOne of the rules was, when you take pictures of any statue or monument with the leaders involved, even paintings or portraits, you cannot crop \u2013 you have to show everything, the head, the feet, the arms.\u201d Instead, he took photos of them in mist.<\/p>\n
