In the evening session current world title holder Luca Brecel of Belgium scored 93 – his top break of the game – as he survived a scare to edge China’s 18-year-old Jiang Jun 4-3. Jun made a 101 break to hit back after going two frames down, but it was not enough.
Scotland’s John Higgins hit a final-frame break of 118 as he eased 4-0 passed Egypt’s Mohamed Ibrahim while Kyren Wilson beat fellow Englishman Ashley Carty 4-3.
In a late night finish England’s Mark Selby completed a tense 4-2 win over China’s Yuan Sijun to progress.
Earlier China’s Ding Junhui, who won this tournament in 2012, beat England’s Jenson Kendrick 4-2.
Ding’s compatriot Zhang Anda, ranked 13th in the world, saw off American Ahmed Aly Elsayed 4-1, while world number 17 Jack Lisowski beat fellow Englishman Oliver Brown 4-2.
Australia’s 2010 world champion Neil Robertson racked up breaks of 50, 68, 57 and 103 in his 4-1 victory over Wales’ Jackson Page.
Barry Hawkins compiled a break of 142 – the highest in Llandudno so far – on his way to a 4-0 win over He Guoqiang, while Welshman Alfie Davies beat Scotland’s Liam Graham 4-1.
Mark Allen put together a 101 break as he also progressed in a 4-3 win over China’s Cao Yupeng.
