Sixty seven people are believed to have died after a passenger plane hit a helicopter in mid-air near Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan airport. Authorities have recovered the flight data recorders from the American Airlines jet, and continue to find bodies in the icy Potomac River into which the plane fell.

Rescue workers in Japan work to pull out a truck driver from a sinkhole in the city of Yashio, near Tokyo. The massive sinkhole contains a gas pipeline, prompting fears of a potential leak. Officials issued evacuation orders for 200 households.
