Police officers remain at the scene of the stabbings

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after two men were killed and another two were injured in a stabbing at a business in south-east London.

A 58-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 27-year-old man died in hospital following the stabbing on Long Lane in Bermondsey at 13:00 BST on Monday.

A third man, who in his 30s, is in a life-threatening condition in hospital, the Metropolitan Police said.

The arrested man, aged 31, is also in hospital although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The victims are believed to have been known to each other, according to officers.

The investigation “continues at pace”, police said

The stabbing is understood to have taken place near consultancy firm Prospira Global and housing provider Trademark Homes.

Labour MP Neil Coyle, who represents Bermondsey and Old Southwark, described the stabbings as “truly awful” and said it was “a targeted, isolated incident”.

A resident, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s terrifying. I walk past there all the time – it makes you feel really uneasy.

“You just don’t expect something like this to happen on a normal weekday.”

Det Ch Supt Emma Bond said: “Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family and friends of the victims of this tragic incident.

“Our investigation continues at pace and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances.”

Scotland Yard said that “a crime scene is in place at a nearby hotel where the arrested man went into”, adding that he was not staying there.
