The family of Sheku Bayoh, a 31-year-old who died in police custody in Fife nine years ago, have settled their damages action against Police Scotland.
Sheku Bayoh was restrained on the ground by six officers in Kirkcaldy in May 2015.
A joint statement issued by the family’s lawyers and Police Scotland said a civil settlement had been agreed without any admission of liability on behalf of the force.
Last month, Police Scotland Chief Constable Jo Farrell met Mr Bayoh’s relatives and offered what was described as “an apology for their ordeal.”
A public inquiry is being held into the circumstances of the father-of-two’s death and whether race was a factor.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) decided not to take legal action against the officers involved in the 2015 incident.
Aamer Anwar, solicitor for the Bayoh family, said: “On May 3 it will be the tenth anniversary of Sheku’s death in police custody, however the struggle for the truth continues.
“As we reach the final stages of the public inquiry, those who broke the law should remember there is no time limit on justice.”
