A teenage girl who was injured getting off a Barry Island funfair ride has been paid £27,000 after a settlement was reached.

The girl, who was 16, was leaving the Crazy Funhouse ride at Barry Island Pleasure Park when she slipped on water that had overflowed from one of the obstacles inside.

Her right foot became trapped in a gap between the ramp and nearby panelling, resulting in a serious leg injury.

She was taken to hospital where she had surgery after the incident in January 2022, and while she has recovered, she is expected to experience ongoing discomfort in her leg.

Legal proceedings were started following the incident and a settlement has now been reached on a without prejudice basis, and without formal admission of liability by the fairground’s owner.

Barry Island Pleasure Park has been asked to comment about the settlement.

The girl’s family welcomed the move, and said they remain committed to raising awareness about the risks and the importance of holding fairground operators accountable.

A family representative said the incident at the pleasure park in the Vale of Glamorgan, has had a “lasting impact”.

“We hope that by bringing this issue to light, other families will be aware of the risks and fairground operators will take their responsibilities more seriously,” they said.

Andrew Collingbourne, a solicitor at Robertsons Solicitors representing the family, said the case “highlights the necessity for stringent health and safety measures in public spaces”.

He added: “Had the appropriate precautions been in place, this accident might have been prevented.”
