A woman has been badly injured by a man who attacked her near a golf club in Midlothian.
The 26-year-old was walking in a wooded area near Newbattle Golf Course in Dalkeith on Friday evening when she was assaulted.
He is described as white, in his late 30s with stubble. He was wearing black trousers, a black waterproof jacket and had a dog lead around his neck, but it is not believed he had a dog with him.
Emergency services attended and she was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police Scotland said the attack took place on Abbey Road between 17:30 and 18:00, and urged anyone with information to contact them.
Det Insp Laura White said: “It’s vital we trace the person responsible.
“We are aware this incident has caused alarm in the local community however, I would like to reassure the public, everything possible is being done and there will continue to be an increased police presence in the area as our investigation progresses.
“Anyone with concerns can speak to these officers.”
