the &#8220;reckless&#8221; protests at Saturday&#8217;s Grand National.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.0\">A total of 118 people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/horse-racing\/65285510\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.$link-2.0\">were arrested<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0.3\"> after animal rights activists &#8211; demonstrating against the staging of the race &#8211; delayed the start by getting on to the Aintree course.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/horse-racing\/65288023\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-1\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.$link-1.0\">Three horses died<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.2\"> during the three-day meeting, including National runner Hill Sixteen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The BHA says it will analyse the races to understand what caused the deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">Animal charity the RSPCA called on Britain&#8217;s horse racing governing body to &#8220;review the circumstances of each of the sad deaths at Aintree, so that we never again exit a &#8216;festival of racing&#8217; with three dead horses&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">In a statement, BHA chief executive officer Julie Harrington said: &#8220;The BHA and Aintree racecourse will now analyse the races in painstaking detail, as is the case every year, to build on our existing data and help us understand what caused these incidents.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">She said improvements in welfare standards has seen the death rate in the sport reduced by a third in 20 years to 0.2% of runners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Four horses died at the Aintree meeting last year, including two injured in the Grand National, which is the climax of the annual race meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">There have been five deaths from 395 runners in the 10 Grand Nationals raced since safety changes were introduced in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Two other horses in this year&#8217;s National &#8211; Recite A Prayer and Cape Gentleman &#8211; were treated on course and taken away by horse ambulance for further assessment, while Dark Raven was put down after a fall in the Turners Mersey Novices&#8217; Hurdle earlier on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">And on the first day of the meeting on Thursday, Envoye Special died after a fall when running loose over the Grand National fences in the Foxhunters&#8217; Chase.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-14\">&#8216;Protests will not diminish National&#8217;s enduring international appeal&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">The National started 14 minutes later than its scheduled start time of 17:15 BST because of protesters who gained access to the track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">The 118 arrests also included those held before the race on Saturday morning and in relation to a protest that blocked the M57 motorway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">Climate and animal rights group Animal Rising, which earlier demonstrated outside Aintree, claimed on social media its supporters entered the track to delay the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;We respect the right of anyone to hold views about our sport but we robustly condemn the reckless and potentially harmful actions of a handful of people in disrupting the race at a time when horses were in the parade ring,&#8221; added Harrington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".w4sdkhdclm.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">&#8220;Those involved in British racing are rightly proud of our sport and the role it plays in providing an unparalleled quality of life for horses bred for racing.
