{"id":2222,"date":"2022-08-17T17:48:24","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T17:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/george-weah-hopes-for-liberian-football-revival-with-legend-as-president\/"},"modified":"2022-08-17T17:48:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T17:48:25","slug":"george-weah-hopes-for-liberian-football-revival-with-legend-as-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/george-weah-hopes-for-liberian-football-revival-with-legend-as-president\/","title":{"rendered":"George Weah: Hopes for Liberian football revival with legend as President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">George Weah made his final international appearance for Liberia aged 51, in a friendly in September 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">When a former Ballon d&#8217;Or winner was elected as the country&#8217;s President, most Liberians would have thought their fortunes on the football pitch would be transformed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">Four and a half years on, stakeholders are still hoping George Weah can dribble past mounting problems and help lift the national game.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">The 55-year-old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-42773165\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.$link-2.0\">was sworn in as President in January 2018,<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.3\"> promising to turn the economy around, fight corruption, reform education and healthcare, and create tens of thousands of jobs for the poor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">But, most of the way through his six-year term in office, some of his biggest supporters believe football&#8217;s financial struggles and lack of development, infrastructure and investment stem from the West African country&#8217;s broken economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">&#8220;The government has other priorities like education, the challenging health sector among others,&#8221; Liberia Football Association (LFA) technical director Henry Browne told BBC Sport Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">&#8220;In the 1980s and &#8217;90s, every government entity infused money into football, which is not the case now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;We are still behind in terms of adequate financial support. Expectations are high on the government from other sectors, but I think it needs to increase its support so that we can start to compete.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">Many had expected Weah to be as successful a President as he was a footballer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">The former Liberia striker made his name in Europe at Monaco, Paris St-Germain and AC Milan before brief spells at Manchester City and Chelsea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">On the eve of his inauguration, then-LFA boss Musa Bility predicted a bright future for football. After all, Weah promised to make &#8220;transforming the lives of all Liberians&#8221; the &#8220;singular mission&#8221; of his presidency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Bility also sat on the Confederation of African Football&#8217;s executive committee, but was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/49095681\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.$link-2.0\">given a 10-year ban by Fifa in July 2019<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.3\"> for breaching its code of ethics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-13\">Challenges facing football<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-14\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-14.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:48.07692307692308%;\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-14.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/16C6C\/production\/_126329239_mediaitem126329238.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/16C6C\/production\/_126329239_mediaitem126329238.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/16C6C\/production\/_126329239_mediaitem126329238.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/16C6C\/production\/_126329239_mediaitem126329238.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/16C6C\/production\/_126329239_mediaitem126329238.jpg 976w\" alt=\"George Weah in action for Liberia against Nigeria in 2001\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-14.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$image-14.1\">Weah and Liberia came close to qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, but finished a point behind group winners Nigeria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">Liberia was embroiled in civil war during the 1990s, but the national team had some of their best days, with Weah leading them to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1996 and 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">While still a player, he served as the national team&#8217;s technical director between 2000 and 2002 and launched an unsuccessful bid to run the LFA after retiring in 2004, before turning to politics a year later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">It is now two decades since the Lone Stars appeared at a major tournament and the country&#8217;s national stadium, the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) sports complex, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/africa\/58200566\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.$link-2.0\">one of several deemed unfit to hold international matches<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.3\"> by Caf and Fifa last August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">Liberia have a better chance than ever of making the next Nations Cup finals in the Ivory Coast in 2024, with their qualifying group reduced to three teams after Zimbabwe were removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">But, after an opening defeat by Morocco, the financially-stricken LFA are searching for a new coach after deciding not to extend the contract of Peter Butler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">Former Lyon and PSG player James Debbah &#8211; also Weah&#8217;s cousin &#8211; shared the international stage with the President for more than two decades but sees politics as very different from football.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;We were successful when he was on the field,&#8221; Debbah, 52, said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;It is a lot more different now trying to reconcile everyone, bringing former professional players to work at the Ministry of Youth &amp; Sports and trying to get the country back on track.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Asked whether Weah should be embarrassed by Liberia&#8217;s inability to qualify for major tournaments, Debbah added: &#8220;I don&#8217;t think it is an embarrassment. He has contributed a lot to football in this country and is still doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;You can&#8217;t blame him for what happens on the pitch. He has been making the resources available for us to qualify.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">Lone Stars deputy coach Thomas Kojo, director of sports at the Ministry of Youth &amp; Sports, also played with Weah for Liberia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t say that the President should take [all the] money from the government&#8217;s coffers to direct it into football but there are many ways money can come to the national team&#8217;s programmes,&#8221; said Kojo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;There are different concession agreements where we can raise money because the President can&#8217;t use every fund to build football infrastructures. Smith Jr says Weah has been &#8220;fully supportive&#8221; of the drive to improve football despite national challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">&#8220;The government has provided subsidies to clubs who qualify for Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup,&#8221; said Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">&#8220;In a bid to improve the national team, it hired Peter Butler and supported every request from him.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">&#8220;There are competing priorities for scarce resources, but the government has been honouring requests from the LFA to fund the national teams at all levels. Weah is prepared to work with footballing authorities. We have to be patient for results.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43.0\">Weah rode to the seat of the presidency on his performances on the pitch and journalist Naomi Tappia believes he will be judged harshly if football has not developed by the time he leaves power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44\"><span data-reactid=\".1qoyy9plc2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44.0\">&#8220;I believe football has to improve looking at the President we have.
