We are all very upset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;He was a legendary footballer but he was also an extremely nice person.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">Francis spent half the year in Spain and the rest in Solihull. He suffered a heart attack 11 years ago and had kept himself fit since with daily power walks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">He had an annual health check through the League Managers&#8217; Association and, according to his spokesman, was &#8220;enjoying life very much&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Francis lost wife Helen in 2017, when she died after being diagnosed with cancer. They had married in 1974 and had sons Matthew and James together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Born in Plymouth, Francis joined Birmingham as a schoolboy and was the Blues&#8217; then-youngest debutant in 1970 aged 16 &#8211; a record only beaten by current England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham in August 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Francis went on to score 119 goals in 280 league appearances before his history-making switch to link up with Clough at Nottingham Forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">After Forest&#8217;s two European Cup wins, he joined Manchester City before having spells with Italian clubs Sampdoria and Atalanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">A season in Scotland with Rangers followed before he joined QPR, where he also became player-manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">He later performed a similar role at Sheffield Wednesday and helped lead them to both the FA Cup and League Cup finals in 1993, losing both to Arsenal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">Francis retired as a player in 1994, shortly before his 40th birthday, having made 632 appearances and scored 235 goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">He then returned to Birmingham as manager between 1996 and 2001 and guided the Blues to the 2001 League Cup final where they lost to Liverpool on penalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">After leaving St Andrew&#8217;s, his final managerial post was at Crystal Palace where he spent two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">He also worked as a media pundit with Sky Sports and BT Sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$image-20\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$image-20.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$image-20.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$image-20.1\">Trevor Francis won the European Cup twice with Nottingham Forest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-21\">&#8216;Forever a giant of the club&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">Fond tributes were paid to Francis by his former clubs, team-mates and colleagues from within the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.$bold-0\">Nottingham Forest<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.1\"> said they were &#8220;deeply saddened&#8221; and Francis was &#8220;a true Forest legend who will never be forgotten&#8221;. <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.$bold-2\">Birmingham City<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.3\"> said Francis will &#8220;forever be revered as a giant of the club&#8221; and he was &#8220;the player everyone wanted to see&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.$bold-0\">Sheffield Wednesday <\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.1\">said they were also &#8220;deeply saddened by the passing of Francis&#8221; and said their &#8220;thoughts are with Trevor&#8217;s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.$bold-0\">Sampdoria<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.1\"> posted a simple &#8220;Rest in peace, Trevor Francis&#8221; while <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.$bold-2\">Rangers<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.3\"> said they were &#8220;saddened to hear of his passing&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">The <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$bold-1\">Football Association<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.2\"> tweeted: &#8220;We are deeply saddened by the news that Trevor Francis has passed away aged 69. He won 52 caps and scored 12 goals &#8211; including two at the 1982 at the World Cup &#8211; for the Three Lions between 1977 and 1986. All of our thoughts are with his family, friends and former clubs.&#8221; The <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$bold-3\">EFL<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.4\"> added that Francis was &#8220;one of the best English football has ever seen&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.$bold-0\">Viv Anderson<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.1\">, who played with Francis at Forest, posted a tribute on Instagram: &#8220;Just heard the unbelievable news regarding Trevor Francis, he was such a wonderful person and fabulous teammate he will be sadly missed, my condolences go to his family and friends RIP.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">Real Madrid and England midfielder <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.$bold-1\">Jude Bellingham<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.2\">, who began his career at Birmingham, posted a photo of of himself as a child meeting Francis. Bellingham wrote: &#8220;A very sad day for BCFC and all of football. Beyond legendary, a trailblazer, a great and an icon of the game. The only thing that could exceed his quality and accolades on the pitch was his class off it. Thank you for all the guidance and the benchmarks you set. Rest in peace, King Trevor!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">Former England and Rangers team-mate <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.$bold-1\">Terry Butcher<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.2\"> told BBC Radio 5 Live that Francis would not have looked out of place in the modern game: &#8220;He was sophisticated, elegant; modern football would have suited him down to the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;He was just class, he really was. He was smooth, he was silky, scored some great goals, a phenomenal player and a very, very nice guy, as everybody says.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">Match of the Day presenter <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.$bold-1\">Gary Lineker<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".11vb3ejavi0.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.2\">, who won 80 caps for England, tweeted: &#8220;Deeply saddened to hear that Trevor Francis has died. A wonderful footballer and lovely man. Was a pleasure to work alongside him both on the pitch and on the telly.
