On Friday, the new energy price cap will be announced and, as we head into autumn, the cost-of-living crisis is set to intensify further. Here are some of the key dates and events in coming weeks that are almost certain to mean more belt-tightening. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"ssrcss-18mjolk-ComponentWrapper ep2nwvo1\">\n<figure class=\"ssrcss-wpgbih-StyledFigure e34k3c23\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-ab5fd8-StyledFigureContainer e34k3c21\"><span class=\"ssrcss-boxzcg-Placeholder e16icw910\"><span><noscript><\/noscript><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"26-August-Energy-price-cap-announcement\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">26 August &#8211; Energy price cap announcement<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">There&#8217;s been a lot of talk of the energy price cap, which is the maximum amount suppliers can charge customers in England, Scotland and Wales for each unit of energy. The cap is meant to protect customers from short-term price spikes and the latest one will come into effect on 1 October, says the regulator Ofgem. But because electricity and gas prices are going up at the moment, the cap is set to go up, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">This means an average annual bill could go up to as much as \u00a33,554 at this point, say industry analysts Cornwall Insight. In 2020 the average cost of a uniform for secondary schools was \u00a3337, and \u00a3315 for primary schools, says The Children&#8217;s Society charity. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">This year, because of rising prices, around a quarter of parents are expecting to spend more than usual, while another quarter will try to reuse old school items rather than buying new, according to Barclaycard research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Meanwhile, one in five plan to donate their children&#8217;s old uniforms to others who can&#8217;t afford new ones. Demand for free school uniforms has rocketed recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-62549900\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">according to one charity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-62601669\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">A new law to protect parents in England from unnecessary school uniform costs<\/a> will come into effect this September. It&#8217;s meant to prevent families from having to shell out on too many branded items. However, schools that need to find a new supplier have until September 2023 to introduce those changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"Costofliving-payments\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">Cost-of-living payments<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Despite all these rising costs, for some households there is some help on the way. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">People on disability benefits will receive a one-off cost-of-living payment of \u00a3150 from 20 September.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">More than eight million low-income households on means-tested benefits will also receive \u00a3324 &#8211; the second instalment of a cost-of-living payment &#8211; this autumn. The first instalment of \u00a3326 was made in July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Those on tax credits will have to wait longer, as the first payment will be in the autumn and the second instalment during the winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"5-Sep-New-prime-minister-to-be-confirmed\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">5 Sep &#8211; New prime minister to be confirmed<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Former chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss are currently fighting it out to lead the Conservative party and become the country&#8217;s new prime minister.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Sunak has promised more money to help with energy bills depending on the extent of price rises, while Ms Truss has pledged to immediately reverse the rise in National Insurance. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"15-September-next-decision-on-interest-rates\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">15 September &#8211; next decision on interest rates<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The Bank of England raised interest rates to 1.75% in August and the thought is that they will go up again, perhaps up to 2.25%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">To give an idea of what that might mean, a quarter-point rise on a \u00a3250,000 standard variable rate mortgage, paid back over 25 years, could mean paying an extra \u00a330 a month, explains Andrew Montlake, of Coreco mortgage brokers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">And people on a fixed-rate mortgage also face problems. &#8220;We&#8217;re starting to see &#8216;payment shock&#8217;,&#8221; says Montlake, referring to the nasty surprise people get when their fixed period expires and they&#8217;re faced with higher rates. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">He adds that it may take a while to feel the full impact of these rate rises. &#8220;Over the next few months and the beginning of next year, when you&#8217;re faced with an increase in mortgage payments together with an increase in energy payments, that&#8217;s when people might start to struggle.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Of course any increase in interest rates would be good news for savers, although banks do not always pass on the full rate rise when it comes to their savings accounts. However, the first instalment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-62338543\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\"> the government&#8217;s \u00a3400 energy rebate will start to arrive<\/a> about now. A discount of \u00a366 or \u00a367 will be applied to households&#8217; energy bills every month until March 2023. How you get it depends on how you pay your bill &#8211; see our chart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-62338543\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">here for more details<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"19-Oct-Inflation-figures-linked-to-state-pension-and-other-benefits\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">19 Oct &#8211; Inflation figures linked to state pension and other benefits<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">This is a key date for pensioners. The Office for National Statistics will reveal September&#8217;s inflation figure and it is this figure that will be used to set the rise in the state pension which will come in in April 2023. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">After being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-58476547\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">suspended for a year<\/a> due to pressures from the pandemic on public finances, the so-called &#8220;triple lock&#8221; will be restored. This ensures that the state pension will always increase each year in line with either inflation, the average wage increase or 2.5%, whichever is the highest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">With inflation currently running at 10.1% and forecast to go up even further, that would mean pensions will see double-digit rises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Though this will be welcome news to pensioners, critics have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-61894368\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">called the move &#8220;ludicrous&#8221;<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Other benefits are also linked to September&#8217;s inflation rate, including universal credit, disability support and jobseeker&#8217;s allowance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"Autumn-budget\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">Autumn budget<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">There would usually be a budget at the end of October or beginning of November, in which tax rises or cuts, public spending plans, and other measures affecting people&#8217;s finances would be announced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">But this may depend on whether the new prime minister calls an emergency budget earlier.
