{"id":34775,"date":"2024-05-19T04:06:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-19T04:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/infected-blood-scandal-surge-in-hepatitis-c-tests\/"},"modified":"2024-05-19T04:06:44","modified_gmt":"2024-05-19T04:06:44","slug":"infected-blood-scandal-surge-in-hepatitis-c-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/infected-blood-scandal-surge-in-hepatitis-c-tests\/","title":{"rendered":"Infected blood scandal: Surge in hepatitis C tests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">There has been a surge in demand for hepatitis C tests since the BBC revealed that hundreds of people in the UK were unknowingly infected with the virus, the Hepatitis C Trust says.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Up to 27,000 people caught it when they were given transfusions with infected blood from the 1970s until 1991. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-68978513\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">According to BBC analysis<\/a>, a further 1,700 people who caught it in the same way have not yet been diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Left untreated, hepatitis can cause chronic liver disease and can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Known as the &#8220;silent killer&#8221;, hepatitis C may cause few symptoms initially, with early signs including night sweats, brain fog, itchy skin and fatigue. But for every year a person carries the virus, their chance of dying from liver cirrhosis and related cancers increases. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Hepatitis C Trust told the BBC 12,800 people in England have requested NHS home-testing kits in just over a week, compared with 2,300 in the entire month of April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The charity said it had been &#8220;inundated with callers across the UK seeking further advice and testing&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It has been incredible seeing the response from the public as they have become more aware of the risks of hepatitis C,&#8221; said Rachel Halford, from the charity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Most people who get tested will receive a negative result and have peace of mind, but it is important to find those individuals who are unaware of their status so that we can get them access to a simple and effective treatment.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-69027421\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There has been a surge in demand for hepatitis C tests since the BBC revealed that hundreds of people in the UK were unknowingly infected with the virus, the Hepatitis C Trust says.
