A 17-year-old has been rejected by the Army, despite passing all the selection tests, because two members of her family have had breast cancer.<\/p>\n

Carys Holmes has a 50-50 chance of inheriting a gene fault from her mother but has not been tested for it yet.<\/p>\n

A lawyer says the Army\u2019s actions could be discriminatory and a serious own goal.<\/p>\n

The Army said it was reviewing Carys\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

Carys trained hard for the tough three-day selection process at Whittington Barracks, near Litchfield, in Staffordshire, and her work paid off.<\/p>\n

She passed the fitness and cognitive tasks with flying colours.<\/p>\n

But near the end of the process, Carys was taken aside and told she was being rejected because of an \u201cextensive\u201d history of breast cancer in her family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019d quit my job to train for it and everything,” Carys says.<\/p>\n

“I just felt so crushed, like, ‘This is it – it’s over.’<\/p>\n

\u201cI put all my dedication into getting in. <\/p>\n

“And then it just felt like something so little like that, it just ruined it all.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really upset me.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Both Carys’s aunt and mother had the Brca1 gene, which increases the risk of breast cancer.<\/p>\n

Her aunt died of the disease and her mother, Rachael, is currently being treated for it.<\/p>\n

Carys and Rachael asked NHS genetic counsellors to assess Carys\u2019 chances of developing breast cancer should she have inherited the gene.<\/p>\n

Her risk of developing it by the age of 30, they suggested, could be:<\/p>\n
