{"id":3600,"date":"2022-09-02T17:04:33","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T17:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/peter-ndlovu-scoring-africas-premier-league-goal-is-still-special-for-zimbabwean\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:04:34","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T17:04:34","slug":"peter-ndlovu-scoring-africas-premier-league-goal-is-still-special-for-zimbabwean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/peter-ndlovu-scoring-africas-premier-league-goal-is-still-special-for-zimbabwean\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Ndlovu: Scoring Africa&#8217;s Premier League goal is still &#8216;special&#8217; for Zimbabwean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">Peter Ndlovu (right) went on to score 34 goals in 154 Premier League appearances for Coventry City after becoming the first African to both play and hit the back of the net in the division<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">Thirty years ago on Friday, Peter Ndlovu made an important piece of Premier League history for Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">Then still a teenager, the former Zimbabwe international became the first African to score in the rebranded English top flight, netting for Coventry City in a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday on 2 September 1992.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">The winger had joined Coventry from Highlanders a year before, and had already set a continental appearance milestone when he came on for John Williams in Coventry&#8217;s Premier League away victory at Tottenham Hotspur on 19 August 1992.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">Ndlovu is delighted to be remembered as the first African to play in the division &#8211; and says his continent&#8217;s contribution to the worldwide appeal and success of the league has been enormous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m sure I was told then, &#8216;Do you know that you&#8217;re the first African to play in the Premier League?&#8217;. I probably just said &#8216;OK&#8217; and didn&#8217;t give it anymore thought,&#8221; Ndlovu, 49 and now based in South Africa, told BBC Sport Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">&#8220;The thing for me was that I was just playing football. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">&#8220;But when you see now after all these years, it&#8217;s very special when you&#8217;ve started something for African players to come after me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m just so proud of all of them that they have made [the Premier League] better and we can see that many of the big money players (English clubs) are buying now are Africans.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">Bulawayo-born Ndlovu spent more than a decade in English football, first forming a dangerous partnership with Micky Quinn and staying at Coventry until a \u00a31.6m move to second-tier Birmingham City in 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">He also played at Huddersfield Town, on loan, and Sheffield United, while representing Zimbabwe&#8217;s national team for 16 years &#8211; which included appearances at two Africa Cup of Nations finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;It&#8217;s history, great memories and all good times. It&#8217;s a very good league and we support it all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">&#8220;Also, with the large number of players playing in the Premier League, as well as all over the other leagues, it shows that Africa is the provider of some of the best players in the world.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-19.0\">Ndlovu says his time in England was the making of him as a man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">&#8220;Well, when I went there first it was just like, &#8216;I&#8217;m going to play football&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">&#8220;Then I realised how much it had changed my life, changed my perception about the football, changed the way that I would act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">&#8220;It made me a better person, it made me understand what success was all about, what football is all about. And when I started concentrating, I became a better person, not only a better footballer, but a better person in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">Ndlovu netted 34 Premier League goals &#8211; which all came for Coventry &#8211; and remains the highest-scoring Zimbabwean in England but he has since been far surpassed in the all-time list of African marksmen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">Liverpool&#8217;s Mohamed Salah leads the way on 122 goals, with now-departed Sadio Mane on 111 and former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba on 104.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">Yet it is a former Ivory Coast team-mate of Drogba who stands out for Ndlovu as Africa&#8217;s best export to the Premier League.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;Yaya Toure represented Africa with pride,&#8221; Ndlovu said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;He was an all-rounder. What I liked about him was he could score, head, dribble and do everything. He was a complete player.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">Ndlovu, who will turn 50 next February, still looks as slim and trim as he did in his playing years, albeit with a touch of grey in his hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">He has been at Sundowns for over a decade, first as a player in the twilight of his career and then as part of the club&#8217;s administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".1hx1vmv6ews.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">While many players from across Africa dream of their own move to the Premier League, Ndlovu will always be remembered for his place in its
