{"id":36761,"date":"2024-06-18T08:35:50","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T08:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/worlds-first-year-long-breach-of-key-1-5c-warming-limit\/"},"modified":"2024-06-18T08:35:51","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T08:35:51","slug":"worlds-first-year-long-breach-of-key-1-5c-warming-limit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/worlds-first-year-long-breach-of-key-1-5c-warming-limit\/","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s first year-long breach of key 1.5C warming limit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At the current rate of emissions, the Paris goal of limiting warming to 1.5C as a long-term average &#8211; rather than a single year &#8211; could be crossed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-67242386\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">within the next decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This would be a hugely symbolic milestone, but researchers say it wouldn&#8217;t mark a cliff edge beyond which climate change will spin out of control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The impacts of climate change would continue to accelerate, however with every little increase in warming &#8211; something that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-58073295\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">extreme heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and floods<\/a> over the past 12 months have given us a taste of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An extra half a degree &#8211; the difference between 1.5C and 2C of global warming &#8211; also greatly increases the risks of passing so-called tipping points. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These are thresholds within the climate system which, if crossed, could lead to rapid and potentially irreversible changes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For example, if the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets passed a tipping point, their potentially runaway collapse could cause catastrophic rises to global sea-levels over the centuries that followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But researchers are keen to emphasise that humans can still make a difference to the world&#8217;s warming trajectory. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-67544977\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">world has made some progress<\/a>, with green technologies like renewables and electric vehicles booming in many parts of the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This has meant some of the very worst case scenarios of 4C warming or more this century &#8211; thought possible a decade ago &#8211; are now considered much less likely, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-65754296\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">based on current policies and pledges<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And perhaps most encouragingly of all, it&#8217;s still thought that the world will more or less stop warming once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-58874518\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">net zero carbon emissions<\/a> are reached.
