and the highest since the 1960s. <!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Government debt as a percentage of UK economic output &#8211; commonly known as gross domestic product &#8211; was at 99.8% last month.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;What has happened is public sector debt has ramped up, first through the global financial crisis and then again through Covid so it is at historically high levels,&#8221; Mr Wells told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today programme.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">High levels of debt means that public sector finances are vulnerable to higher interest rates which makes repayments more costly. Mr Wells warned that large debt leaves less headroom to deal with any future crisis.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Bank of England had been raising interest rates in an effort to bring down UK inflation but one knock-on effect of this is the government having to pay more interest on debt.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last month, the interest payable on central government debt was \u00a38bn, which was one of the highest amounts on record.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Tax is a key battleground in the upcoming general election, with the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats all ruling out increasing income tax, VAT and National Insurance (NI) rates.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But cuts in NI have eaten into how much money the government receives at a time when politicians are unwilling to commit to spending more on public services.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The government got \u00a3900m less from NI last month than it did in May last year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But overall, tax receipts went up by \u00a31bn after revenue from income, corporation and value added taxes increased.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Taxes, including income tax, have effectively been rising after a government freeze on thresholds &#8211; the amount of money people earn before they start paying tax or before they start paying a higher rate.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Thresholds usually rise in line with inflation, but in 2021 the Conservative government froze most bands in response to Covid.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This has dragged more people into paying higher rates, in a phenomenon known as &#8220;fiscal drag&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cmll7k8pl2xo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>19 minutes ago By\u00a0Tom Espiner,\u00a0Reporter, BBC News Getty Images Government borrowing in May hit the highest since the Covid crisis but was lower than the UK&#8217;s fiscal watchdog had forecast.
