A man who makes high-end guitars says Brexit has meant exporting his instruments has gone from 48 hours to three weeks.<\/p>\n

Steve Toon added the process has gone from costing \u00a360 to \u00a3240 with his hand-crafted items often turning up late and “trashed”.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s become actually quite difficult to trade. My European sales have dropped off by 50%,” he said.<\/p>\n

Steve, from Gloucester, does not want to rejoin the EU. He was one of many people who have contacted the BBC’s Your Voice, Your Vote and wanted to know why parties are avoiding discussing Brexit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Courier firms now have to complete complex customs declarations, and pay tariffs on his guitars. Many now refuse his trade altogether.<\/p>\n

Steve Toon is not alone.<\/p>\n

The Economist newspaper reported<\/a> higher trade barriers had seen the export of goods from the UK shrink by 10% since 2019.<\/p>\n

The Independent Office for Budget Responsibility<\/a> estimates Brexit has made the UK economy 4% smaller than it might have been.<\/p>\n

Mr Toon does not want Britain to rejoin the EU, or even the single market. He just wants politicians to come up with a plan to get his guitars across the channel in under a month.<\/p>\n

But in this election, politicians have stopped talking about Brexit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to talk about a growth strategy, I don\u2019t see how you can talk about a growth strategy without talking about the big elephant in the room \u2013 which is Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Plenty of others agree with Steve.<\/p>\n

When we asked readers through our Your Voice<\/a>, Your Vote<\/a> what issues they most wanted discussed in the election, many had one simple question.<\/p>\n

As Stephen Lawes from Wiltshire put it: \u201cWhy are all major parties refusing to debate Brexit?\u201d<\/p>\n

Five years ago, the General Election was about nothing else. Boris Johnson pledged famously to \u201cGet Brexit Done\u201d, and won a landslide.<\/p>\n

Today, the parties have dropped Brexit to a footnote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cDiscussion on the dire economic consequences of Brexit seem to have been avoided in every interview I have watched.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our mailbag is not scientific, and perhaps unsurprisingly more people wrote to complain about Brexit than to say they were happy with progress.<\/p>\n

But all agreed that the parties seem to be staying off the subject.<\/p>\n

Tim Cottrill, from Wiltshire, said: \u201cIt is odd that major parties can barely bring themselves to mention the word.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Divisions over Brexit dominated the 2019 election but have been largely ignored in 2024<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

In their public campaigning and TV debates, none of the main parties have raised the topic of Brexit.<\/p>\n

Comb the manifestos, though and you can find Brexit policies if you look hard enough.<\/p>\n

The Tories\u2019 pledge document runs to 26,916 words.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cBrexit\u201d appears 12 times.<\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s manifesto is equally long, 26,606 words.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrexit\u201d appears just once.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“None of them want to upset leave voters”, says Prof Paula Surridge of Bristol University<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

Prof Paula Surridge has an idea what is going on.<\/p>\n

She explained: \u201cThey\u2019re all trying to keep quiet about Brexit because none of them want to upset the leave voters who voted Conservative in 2019, and now are heading off to different parties.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prof Surridge teaches politics and sociology at Bristol University, analysing polls and voting behaviour to understand what makes people tick.<\/p>\n

Brexit, she says, is a touchy subject.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a good look if you\u2019re trying to win them over to say, \u2018you were wrong, you were wrong\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the South West the Liberal Democrats don\u2019t want to talk about Brexit because they\u2019re trying to win over Conservative voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cElsewhere in the country, Labour have managed to win over some leave voters, and they don\u2019t want to lose those either.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for some of our readers, that approach is too cynical.<\/p>\n

Jane Kenchington emailed from North Nibley, in Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been put in the too difficult box,\u201d the retired vicar told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to offend red wall voters, and we don\u2019t want to play into the hands of Farage. But actually we can\u2019t ignore it.<\/p>\n

“They\u2019re afraid of losing votes rather than doing what I think is right for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what do the parties say on Brexit?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Party Pledges<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
\n

Conservatives<\/b><\/p>\n

Most mentions of Brexit in the Conservative Manifesto<\/a> are claims that the Tory government has improved life after the UK left the EU.<\/p>\n

For example, \u201c We have used post-Brexit tax freedoms including replacing complex EU alcohol duty rates.\u201d<\/p>\n

In future, the party pledges further measures such as:<\/p>\n

\u201cSeize the benefits of Brexit by signing further trade deals, speeding up infrastructure and unblocking 100,000 homes, cutting red tape for business, and creating new fishing opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Labour<\/b><\/p>\n

Out of 11 policy areas addressed in Labour\u2019s manifesto<\/a>, Brexit appears in the tenth, called \u201cBritain Reconnected\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Labour, Britain will stay outside of the EU. But to seize the opportunities ahead, we must make Brexit work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The party insists it will not rejoin the European Single Market or the Customs Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead, Labour will work to improve the UK\u2019s trade and investment relationship with the EU, by tearing down unnecessary barriers to trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Liberal Democrats<\/b><\/a> have long campaigned for a \u2018second referendum\u2019 to rejoin the EU outright. That ambition is now in the far future. Their manifesto instead wants much closer agreements with the EU, culminating in this pledge:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would aim to place the UK-EU relationship on a more formal and stable footing by seeking to join the Single Market.\u201d<\/p>\n

What of the one party that owes its existence to the Brexit debate?<\/p>\n

On the front page of Reform’s<\/b> manifesto<\/a>, the third line loudly proclaims:<\/p>\n

\u201cBrexit is the opportunity of a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it is actually page 15 before any post-Brexit policies are detailed.<\/p>\n

The party wants to scrap the remaining laws that originated in the EU, some 6,000 of them. They would leave the European Court of Human Rights, and tear up the Windsor Framework which brought a settlement to Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

The Green Party<\/b><\/a> is the most clearly pro-European manifesto. But you have to read to page 43 to find a pledge to \u201cRe-join the EU as soon as the domestic political situation is favourable and EU member states are willing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The party wants to rejoin the Customs Union in the meantime, and promises a \u201cspeedy\u201d retrn to the free movement of people across UK\/EU borders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
