CC-BY-ND<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Scientists say their new method can work on complex, curved and even moving surfaces<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The artificial skin is made in the lab, using living cells.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Not only is it soft, like real skin but it can repair itself if cut, the scientists say. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Past attempts to attach it proved difficult, though. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The team tried using mini hooks as anchors &#8211; but those damaged the skin as the robot moved. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In people, the skin is tethered to underlying structures by ligaments &#8211; tiny ropes of flexible collagen and elastane. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">To recreate that, the researchers drilled lots of little holes into the robot and applied a gel containing collagen, and then the layer of artificial skin on top. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The gel plugs the holes and tethers the skin to the robot.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Plastic surgery<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;By mimicking human skin-ligament structures and by using specially made V-shaped perforations in solid materials, we found a way to bind skin to complex structures,&#8221; lead researcher Prof Shoji Takeuchi said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The natural flexibility of the skin and the strong method of adhesion mean the skin can move with the mechanical components of the robot, without tearing or peeling away.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The latest results are published in the journal <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-reports-physical-science\/fulltext\/S2666-3864(24)00335-7?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2666386424003357%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Cell Reports Physical Science<!-- --><\/a>. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It will take many more years of testing for the technology to become an everyday reality, the researchers say.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Another important challenge is creating human-like expressions by integrating sophisticated actuators, or muscles, inside the robot,&#8221; Prof Takeuchi said. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But the work may also be useful in research into skin ageing, cosmetics and surgical procedures, including plastic surgery.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cedd3208veyo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10 hours ago By\u00a0Michelle Roberts,\u00a0Digital health editor, BBC News \u00a92024 Takeuchi et al.
