UV exposure can also cause dangerous skin damage. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Is UV dangerous?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">We need to control our exposure, says Prof Dorothy Bennett, from St George&#8217;s, University of London.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">UV is beneficial because it enables our skin to produce essential vitamin D.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This is important for the function of bones, blood cells and our immune system. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;But UV is also dangerous because every exposure to UV, especially every sunburn, increases our risk of skin cancer.  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Melanoma, the most dangerous skin cancer, is now the fifth commonest cancer in the UK, the ongoing rise being attributed to sunbathing,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">UV radiation promotes skin cancer by damaging DNA in skin cells.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It has also been linked to <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/warnings-and-advice\/seasonal-advice\/health-wellbeing\/uv\/how-uv-can-affect-your-eyes\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">eye problems,<!-- --><\/a> including cataracts.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And there is <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/radiation-the-known-health-effects-of-ultraviolet-radiation\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">growing evidence<!-- --><\/a> that UV light may reduce the body&#8217;s ability to defend itself against certain diseases.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">What is the UV index? <!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Levels of UV radiation vary throughout the day.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The highest readings occur in the four-hour period around &#8220;solar noon&#8221;,  which is when the sun is at its highest spot in the sky &#8211; usually from late morning to early afternoon.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The UV Index (or UVI) is a standard, international measure of ultraviolet radiation.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Values start at zero and can rise above 10.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The higher the number, the greater the potential for damage to the skin and eyes &#8211; &#8211; using self-tan.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;When you tan, ultraviolet light stimulates your skin cells to produce pigment to try and protect the DNA of skin cells &#8211; but that protection is minimal &#8211;  the equivalent of SP4.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;That is not much protection at all &#8211; so you can still burn very early,&#8221; he warns.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Can you tan even when it is cloudy and windy?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">BBC Weather&#8217;s Helen Willetts says: &#8220;Your skin can burn just as quickly whether it&#8217;s 30C or 20C.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t be caught out on cloudy days. UV will still penetrate thin clouds &#8211; so even if you don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s that sunny, you can still burn.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The amount of UV reaching your skin is not driven by the daily temperature, Dr Michaela Hegglin, from the University of Reading&#8217;s Department of Meteorology, says. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;UV levels on a bright and breezy late April day in the UK will be about the same as a warm sunny day in August.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">What about skin ageing?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Unprotected exposure to UV rays  plays a substantial role in skin ageing &#8211; breaking down collagen and elastin fibres in healthy skin.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This contributes to wrinkles and loosened folds.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The sun&#8217;s rays also dry out skin, making it coarse and leathery.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">How can you avoid UV damage?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Tips from the NHS, include:<!-- --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-5c9c90b0-0 cnfHHs\">\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest (in the UK that is between 11:00 and 15:00 from March to October)<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">never burn<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">cover up with suitable clothing and do not forget sunglasses<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">use at least factor 30 sunscreen <!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">reapply sun screen every two hours<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">take extra care with children<!-- --><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Global research shows people often miss parts of their bodies when putting on sunscreen, Dr Shergill warns. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;People often forget include side of nose by eye &#8211; where I have seen a lot of skin cancer,&#8221; he says. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Other areas include the groove by the side of the nose and into the cheek, the temples and the upper chest.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As a guide, adults should aim to apply about six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen if covering the entire body.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">I have brown skin. Do I need to worry? <!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Yes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I have, for example, seen South Asian people with skin cancer and I have seen people with dual-heritage get skin cancer. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The skin may look darker, but it doesn\u2019t always behave that way from a protection point of view  \u2013 because there are more genes at play than we think about, &#8221; Dr Shergill says.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Regardless of skin colour &#8211; the risk of eye damage and of potential harmful effects on the immune system remains.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ckmg1572e8ko\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getty Images Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is emitted by the Sun and penetrates the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.
