{"id":37799,"date":"2024-07-03T08:10:44","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T08:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/naomi-long-wont-appeal-sex-offenders-law-court-ruling\/"},"modified":"2024-07-03T08:10:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T08:10:46","slug":"naomi-long-wont-appeal-sex-offenders-law-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/naomi-long-wont-appeal-sex-offenders-law-court-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Naomi Long &#8216;won&#8217;t appeal&#8217; sex offenders law court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long will not appeal a court ruling that struck down a law on identifying suspected sex offenders, BBC News NI understands.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In May, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cevvdjrywgdo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">a judge ruled the legislation was not compatible<!-- --><\/a> with human rights or press freedom.  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mrs Long said she was considering whether to appeal the ruling, but other Stormont parties had indicated they were not in favour of it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The law, called the Justice (Sexual Offences and Trafficking Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, came into effect in 2023.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It granted anonymity for life &#8211; and for 25 years after death &#8211; to suspects who were not charged with any sexual offences.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Media organisations had joined forces in a bid to have sections of it declared legally invalid.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At the time, the justice minister <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c8005g9lxz5o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected claims the law had been rushed through<!-- --><\/a> or that she had misled the assembly over it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On Tuesday, Mrs Long said the ruling has &#8220;potentially far-reaching ramifications&#8221;, which would have impact across every Stormont department and the legislative process.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said any decision to appeal would be hers alone, but she wanted to hear the view of other ministers by 17:00 BST on Tuesday.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Sinn F\u00e9in, the DUP and Ulster Unionist ministers are believed to have expressed concerns about any appeal.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is understood Mrs Long will confirm the decision later on Wednesday.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cxx2w3y0217o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long will not appeal a court ruling that struck down a law on identifying suspected sex offenders, BBC News NI understands.
