They set off a chain of events which saw him trying to avoid extradition to Sweden by seeking asylum in a London embassy for seven years.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2019 the Swedish authorities ended their investigation into Assange and dropped their extradition bid. However, he spent the next five years in a British prison fighting extradition to the US, where he faced prosecution over massive leaks of confidential information. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">These include US army footage showing Iraqi civilians being killed, and documents suggesting the US military killed hundreds of Afghan civilians in unreported incidents.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Assange was eventually <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cxee24pvl94o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">freed last month<!-- --><\/a>, after a plea deal with the US.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ardin is fiercely proud of Assange&#8217;s work for WikiLeaks, and insists that it should never have landed him behind bars.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe have the right to know about the wars that are fought in our name,\u201d she says.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI\u2019m sincerely happy for him and his family, that they can be together. The punishment he\u2019s got has been very unproportionate.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Speaking to Ardin over Zoom in Stockholm, it quickly becomes clear that she has no problem keeping what she sees as the two Assanges apart in her head &#8211; the visionary activist and the man who she says does not treat women well.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She is at pains to describe him neither as a hero nor a monster, but a complicated man.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The 45-year-old activist is also a Christian deacon, with a belief in forgiveness, and she uses the words &#8220;truth&#8221; and &#8220;transparency&#8221; again and again throughout the interview. It might explain why she is in awe of what WikiLeaks accomplished but, at the same time, bitterly disappointed that the assault allegations she made against Assange were never formally tested.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ardin describes her encounter with Assange in her book, No Heroes, No Monsters: What I Learned Being The Most Hated Woman On The Internet.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2010, just three weeks after WikiLeaks\u2019 release of the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-10757344\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghan war logs<!-- --><\/a>, she invited him to Stockholm to take part in a seminar organised by the religious wing of Sweden\u2019s Social Democrats.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Assange did not want to stay at a hotel for security reasons and Ardin was due to be away, so she offered him her flat. But she returned early.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">After an evening of discussing politics and human rights, they ended up having what she describes as uncomfortable sex during which she says he humiliated her.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ardin says she agreed to have sex with Assange as long as he used a condom, but the condom broke and he continued. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ardin suspects he broke it deliberately.<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>If this was the case, he probably would have committed an offence under Swedish law.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Later, Ardin writes that she heard from another woman &#8211; named in legal papers as SW &#8211; who had attended the seminar. WikiLeaks had just leaked 76,000 US military documents &#8211; sparking massive global attention and scrutiny of US foreign policy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On 21 August, 2010, WikiLeaks tweeted: \u201cWe were warned to expect \u2018dirty tricks\u2019. Now we have the first one.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Another post followed the next day: \u201cReminder: US intelligence planned to destroy WikiLeaks as far back as 2008.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Assange\u2019s UK lawyer Mark Stephens claimed that a \u201choneytrap\u201d had been sprung and that \u201cdark forces\u201d were at work.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A social media furore erupted which Ardin describes as \u201chell\u201d \u2013 she tells me the amount of harassment and death threats forced her to leave Sweden at one point.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t work. My life passed me by for two years.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">To this day, many believe Ardin is part of a US conspiracy, and that her allegations are false. Greece\u2019s former Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis, a long-time supporter of Assange, last week described her claims as \u201cmud\u201d and \u201cinnuendo\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">No evidence has ever been found to link Ardin with US intelligence. In 2012, he took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Sweden refused to guarantee he would not be extradited to the US, but said any move to do so would <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aklagare.se\/en\/media\/press-service\/the-assange-matter\/can-assange-be-extradited-from-sweden-to-the-usa\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">need to be approved by the UK too<!-- --><\/a>. Both countries also said they would not extradite him if they thought he might face the death penalty.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2015, Swedish prosecutors dropped the investigation into Ardin\u2019s allegations as time had run out. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2019, prosecutors <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-50473792\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">abandoned their investigation into SW&#8217;s claims<!-- --><\/a>, saying the  evidence had \u201cweakened considerably due to the long period of time since the events in question\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">By this time, Assange was being held in London\u2019s high-security Belmarsh prison, facing extradition to the US on espionage charges. So I have to let it go.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She says some of her doubters don\u2019t take her seriously because they don\u2019t think the details of her experience, or reaction, were dramatic enough.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She suggests there\u2019s an expectation of sexual assault to always be brutal, involve a lot of violence, and leave the victim heavily traumatised &#8211; and if that doesn\u2019t happen you can\u2019t be a real victim, or a real offender.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But that doesn\u2019t align with what Ardin describes as the reality of her experience. She stresses that doesn\u2019t make it any less serious or unacceptable. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She slams many of Assange&#8217;s supporters &#8211; and journalists &#8211; for seeking a \u201cone-sided narrative\u201d which turns him into a hero, and her into an evil CIA agent.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI think that we have a problem that we have to have these heroes that are flawless\u2026 I don\u2019t think heroes exist outside fairytales.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ardin says her intention was never to write off Assange as a one-dimensional villain, to be \u201ckicked out of society\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Offenders are seen as \u201cmonsters, completely different from all other men&#8221;, she says. And this means the \u201csystem goes on\u201d, she argues, as \u201cnormal\u201d men don\u2019t realise that they, too, can be prone to violence &#8211; so they don\u2019t interrogate themselves.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI want him to be seen as a normal guy. That&#8217;s what normal guys do sometimes. She is less interested in punishment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cJustice for me would have been to have transparency.
