And is it safe?<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Two experts give us their take.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Former coal fired power station West Burton A, near Retford, was chosen as the location for the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), in October 2022.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, even if investors are found and construction completed on schedule, the facility is unlikely to open before 2040.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Explaining the process, Dr Aneeqa Khan, lecturer in nuclear materials at the University of Manchester, said: \u201cNuclear fusion is the process that powers the Sun, where two nuclei fuse together, liberating huge amounts of energy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cRecreating the conditions in the centre of the Sun on Earth is a huge challenge.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe need to heat up isotopes of hydrogen gas so they become the fourth state of matter, called plasma.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIn order for the nuclei to fuse together on Earth, we need temperatures 10 times hotter than the Sun \u2013 around 100 million Celsius.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-814e9212-1 fcEyBx\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/bbcx\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-814e9212-0 cCvKR hide-when-no-script\"\/><img sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 50vw, (min-width: 1008px) 66vw, 96vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/240\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 240w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 320w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 480w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/640\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 640w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/800\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 800w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 1024w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1536\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp 1536w\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/3ccf\/live\/de739650-4b62-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"UK Atomic Energy Authority Computer design of fusion reactor\" class=\"sc-814e9212-0 hIXOPW\"\/><span class=\"sc-814e9212-2 jesyMJ\">UK Atomic Energy Authority<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">The promise of fusion is great &#8211; but so are the challenges<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Brian Appelbe, a research fellow in nuclear fusion at Imperial College London, said fusion differed from traditional nuclear power \u2013 fission &#8211; in several fundamental ways.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said: \u201cFission is about breaking heavy element apart, fusion is about forcing lighter element together.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThe amounts of energy that are released with fusion are far higher than fission.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cAnd the elements being used, like hydrogen, are far more widely available than the fission fuels. Some, like deuterium, a form of hydrogen, can be sourced from sea water.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThis is a much cleaner source of energy because it makes less radioactive material and it is radioactivity which doesn\u2019t last as long.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Khan added: \u201cWe are still a way off commercial fusion.
