It said water companies must be able to charge more so they can spend money on fixing leaks.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It argued water companies had to be profitable to attract the investment needed to improve a system overwhelmed by the increased rainfall caused by climate change.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The UK&#8217;s largest water company, Thames, has already seen its shareholders abandon plans to invest more money, plunging it into a financial crisis.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A report to be published by consultancy Oxera on behalf of Water UK on Wednesday in response to Ofwat&#8217;s draft decision said it &#8220;would likely result in significant investability issues for the sector as a whole&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;In particular, there is a material risk that the sector is unable to raise the new equity investment required to finance the proposed investment programme,&#8221; it will add.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">An Ofwat spokesperson told the BBC it would carefully consider all responses to its proposals.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We expect to receive responses from many organisations, including water companies, customers, environmental and consumer organisations and investors. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;These are likely to reflect a diverse range of views on the proposals we have made.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Critics have said water companies have historically neglected investment in favour of executive salaries and shareholder dividends.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They have suggested <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-68270068\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">a ban on director bonuses<!-- --><\/a> until leaks and sewage spills are dealt with.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Water UK&#8217;s comments will come as <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5ypp032le0o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Thames, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water face a \u00a3168m fine from Ofwat<!-- --><\/a> for a &#8220;catalogue of failure&#8221; over years of leaks.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Raw sewage spills into England&#8217;s rivers and the sea by water companies <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-68665335\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">more than doubled last year<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Meanwhile, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4nn46rjej6o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">a BBC investigation earlier this year<!-- --><\/a> revealed sewage had potentially been released illegally 6,000 times in 2022 by England&#8217;s water companies in breach of their permits.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx2lgl9kypno\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Water companies will say later today that a planned cap on bill increases would create a &#8220;material risk&#8221; they would fail to raise the investment needed to stop sewage spills.
