The number of racially-motivated incidents reported to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is at a record high, according to newly published data.<\/p>\n

They are averaging almost four per day.<\/p>\n

The figures cover the 12 months to the end of June \u2013 before the wave of recent attacks and disorder linked to anti-immigration protests<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The number of racially-motivated incidents was 1,411, an increase of 144 on the previous one year period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is the highest figure since the data series began in 2004.<\/p>\n

The PSNI say not all incidents are of the \u201clevel of severity\u201d to constitute being crimes.<\/p>\n

Of the 1,411 incidents, 891 were categorised as involving crimes.<\/p>\n

Around 500 of the crimes involved violence against a person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

More racially-motivated incidents than sectarian ones<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The data is produced by the PSNI<\/a> on a quarterly basis and captures incidents and crimes with a hate motivation.<\/p>\n

A number of years ago, racially-motivated incidents overtook those linked to sectarianism.<\/p>\n

The trend continues in the latest data set.<\/p>\n

There were 967 sectarian incidents recorded \u2013 that is down 254 on the previous year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
