Datacentres are the massive warehouse-like buildings from which big tech firms like Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook deliver their cloud services.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Other organisations, large and small, run their own dedicated facilities, or rely on \u201cco-location\u201d datacentres to host their computer equipment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Demand for datacentre space has been turbocharged in recent years by the rise of artificial intelligence, which demands ever more high-end computers, and ever more electricity to power them.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Total datacentre floorspace across Europe was just over six million sq ft (575,418 sq m) in 2015, according to real estate firm Savills, but will hit more than 10 million sq ft this year. In London alone, datacentre \u201ctake up\u201d in 2025 will be almost triple that of 2019, predicts real estate services firm CBRE.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But while demand is surging, says Dame Dawn Childs, chief executive of UK-based operator, Pure Data Centres Group, \u201cdelivering and satisfying that demand is challenging.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Just finding enough land or power for new datacentres is a problem. Labour\u2019s election manifesto promised to overhaul planning to encourage the building of infrastructure, including datacentres and the power networks they rely on.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But the industry is also struggling to find the people to build them.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThere&#8217;s just not enough skilled construction workers to go around,\u201d says Dame Dawn.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For companies like Datalec, it\u2019s not just a case of recruiting staff from more traditional construction sectors.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Datacentre operators \u2013 whether <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.equinix.co.uk\/what-is-colocation\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">colocation specialists<!-- --><\/a> or the big tech firms \u2013 have very specific needs. \u201cIt is very, very fast. It&#8217;s very, very highly engineered,\u201d says Datalec\u2019s operations director (UK &amp; Ireland), Matt Perrier-Flint.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI&#8217;ve done commercial premises, I&#8217;ve worked in universities,\u201d he explains. At the same time, they won\u2019t want to disrupt key business periods \u2013 ecommerce operators will typically put a freeze on any work in the runup to Christmas for example.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This can mean long days for Datalec\u2019s teams, or even running shifts overnight.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">If the demands are high, the rewards are significant too. Many are concerned that the construction workforce is greying.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dame Dawn says, \u201cI think, along with all of the other technical industries, we&#8217;re having difficulty feeding the pipe.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">One reason for the shortfall is a focus on university education at the expense of traditional technical or apprenticeship routes in recent decades.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Perrier-Flint says that when he was younger, the consensus was \u201cyou can never go wrong with a trade, you can never go wrong with construction&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But there are more choices to tempt young people now, he suggests, including software development or other technology careers. Or indeed being an influencer on the very platforms run out of the datacentres.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mark Yeeles, vice president, Secure Power Division, UK and Ireland, at power and automation firm Schneider Electric, began as an apprentice in the 1990s.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Given that the industry is often looking for people with 15 years\u2019 experience, he says, \u201cThe time to start investing in apprentices was 10 years ago.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, Schneider Electric is changing its ratio of graduates to apprentices. \u201cWe\u2019ve doubled our intake of apprentices,\u201d says Mr Yeeles.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"links-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jVHuOl\">\n<div class=\"sc-93223220-0 sc-46222299-0 ctbOlq eluqFz\"><span data-testid=\"links-title\" class=\"sc-46222299-2 gdGcRT\">More Technology of Business<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The entire industry must rethink how it recruits younger people, he adds. \u201cMy team needs to reflect the communities we\u2019re working in,\u201d he says, including in terms of gender, background, and experience.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And it needs to consider the career pathways it offers and recognise young people\u2019s need for a \u201cmission\u201d or \u201cpurpose\u201d. Schneider Electric, for example, has launched a sustainability apprenticeship program.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dame Dawn agrees about the need to increase diversity and recognise recruits\u2019 need for a mission.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIn terms of a purpose, we&#8217;re serving the whole population,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd if we could be part of the solution for net zero, then it&#8217;s serving a significant purpose, because it&#8217;s enabling humanity to drive forward.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But perhaps the first challenge is simply explaining to potential recruits why datacentres and the cloud are central to so many facets of modern life.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As Billy Keeper says, \u201cYou try and explain to someone what the cloud is and what we offer.
