says Prof Caroline Moraes, of the University of Birmingham. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">One example is the voluntary simplicity movement in the 19th Century, she says, which advocated for an anti-consumerist lifestyle.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Prof Caroline, a marketing and consumer expert specialising in sustainable consumption, says the renewed interest in 2024 can tell us about modern-day worries.  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She says it points to a greater concern over the environment and the cost-of-living crisis but also a greater awareness of brand ethics and where the things we buy come from.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;The part we need to play&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Earlier this year, fast fashion giant Shein said it <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4glzzdd88lo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">found two cases of child labour in its supply chain<!-- --><\/a>, some <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-68172560\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">luxury perfumes<!-- --><\/a> have also been linked to child labour and concerns about the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-60382624\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">fashion industry&#8217;s environmental credentials<!-- --><\/a> are widely reported.  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I think all of us are beginning to realise the part we need to play in terms of tackling the sustainability challenges and the climate crisis we&#8217;re facing,&#8221; says Prof Caroline.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Author Andrea thinks the sudden rise in interest also shows a fatigue with consumer culture. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I think people like myself are so excited about underconsumption because we share the same mission, which is &#8216;let&#8217;s just slow down&#8217;,&#8221; she says.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;But really it&#8217;s rooted in a lack of control over the cost of living.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last week, figures showed prices were <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6230y85k06o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">rising at the fastest rate since March<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">While the cost of <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cnv3y61qq41o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">turkey and sprouts has driven down the cost of a Christmas dinner<!-- --><\/a> this year, what you pay for potatoes, carrots and parsnips has shot up. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;When life feels chaotic and overwhelming, you&#8217;re always going to have this human retreat to something slower,&#8221; says Andrea. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Trends come and go but the people Newsbeat spoke to hope that underconsumption might spark meaningful changes in our shopping habits all year around.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We are conditioned to believe we need to be consuming more because this is the time of year to do so,&#8221;
