The clear-up operation is continuing after Storm \u00c9owyn caused chaos across Northern Ireland on Friday.<\/p>\n

It brought winds of more than 90mph<\/a> and, at the peak, left 30% of homes and businesses without power. <\/p>\n

About 189,000 properties were still without electricity as of 06:00 GMT on Saturday. <\/p>\n

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Networks say some residents will be without power for up to 10 days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Northern Ireland saw the highest gust in 27 years, with 92.2mph (148km\/h) recorded at Killowen in County Down.<\/p>\n

The rare red weather warning, which came in on Friday morning, ended at 14:00 GMT.<\/p>\n

A major clean up is underway in the north west after a large tree came down outside the Parochial House at St Patrick’s church in Pennyburn. <\/p>\n

The church authorities had taken the precaution of having a number of other trees, which were a potential danger, trimmed down previously. <\/p>\n

Services at the chapel are unaffected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Along with further wind warnings until midnight on Friday, a snow and ice warning was issued across Northern Ireland from 19:00 on Friday until 10:00 on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Before the storm hit, the Met Office said there was a danger to life and political leaders urged people to stay at home.<\/a><\/p>\n

As the strong winds swept across the island of Ireland there was damage to buildings and trees fell down, blocking roads and damaging homes.<\/p>\n

Schools, colleges, universities and businesses closed and most hospital appointments were cancelled as the storm caused significant disruption.<\/p>\n

Rail and bus services and flights were also affected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The NIE Networks said Storm Eowyn caused “devastating levels of damage” to the electricity network in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

“Almost one third of the people here have no power,” said Derek Hynes from NIE.<\/p>\n

“We believe that there are well over 4,000 locations in Northern Ireland where our network has been damaged by the wind or falling trees,” he added.<\/p>\n

He said they are “prioritising faults” which affect the largest numbers of homes and businesses, but that it’s likely that it will take up to 10 days to restore power to all residents.<\/p>\n

In Newtownards, the Craigantlet Road, from the junction of Dunlady Road up to the Cairn Wood Car Park, is closed because of “hazardous conditions that have already resulted in multiple vehicles falling off the road”, the PSNI has said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
