A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Plymouth.<\/p>\n

Paul Butler, 53, of Stangray Avenue, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates Court accused of killing university lecturer Claire Chick.<\/p>\n

The 48-year-old was found seriously injured in West Hoe Road on Wednesday and later died in hospital.<\/p>\n

Mr Butler, also charged with the unlawful possession of a bladed article, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday and on Friday 3 March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.<\/p>\n

He was wearing a custody-issued grey tracksuit.<\/p>\n

Magistrate District Judge Stuart Smith said he wanted to express his condolences to the family of Claire Chick – who were in the public gallery.<\/p>\n

“This must be an incredibly difficult time,” he said. <\/p>\n

“The pain, anger and loss you are suffering is unimaginable.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
