It has pledged that, if required, it will pass legislation to address co-operation. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But that has yet to occur and relatives of some of those murdered remain concerned.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The public inquiry, which <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cz9ejn3yxv8o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">opened on Tuesday<!-- --><\/a>, seeks to determine whether the bombing could have been prevented by UK state authorities.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The inquiry cannot compel anyone from outside the UK to give evidence, such as current or former members of An Garda Sioch\u00e1na (Irish police).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The intelligence picture \u2013 north and south \u2013 is a key area for the inquiry.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Flanagan, formerly Ireland&#8217;s minister for justice and minster for foreign affairs, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/ireland\/2025\/0202\/1494255-omagh-tyrone-flanagan\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">told Irish broadcaster RT\u00c9<!-- --><\/a> that a parallel inquiry would have been &#8220;imminently desirable&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added: &#8220;I accept fully what (Taoiseach) Mich\u00e1el Martin and (T\u00e1naiste) Simon Harris have consistently said about the Irish government co-operating fully with the inquiry.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;But I think an opportunity has been lost by not having a parallel process.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Flanagan said an Irish inquiry could have worked &#8220;a tandem&#8221; with the one in the UK.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;My fear now is that there will be gaps.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;While the Irish government says it will not be found wanting, my concern is we will not be able to square that circle on compellability and that vital evidence may not be forthcoming,&#8221; Mr Flanagan said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cvgedz42pepo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Irish government minister is concerned vital evidence may not be seen by the public inquiry into the 1998 Omagh bomb.
