{"id":51028,"date":"2025-03-18T13:11:29","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T13:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/thames-water-bbc-documentary-shows-firm-under-siege\/"},"modified":"2025-03-18T13:11:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T13:11:30","slug":"thames-water-bbc-documentary-shows-firm-under-siege","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/thames-water-bbc-documentary-shows-firm-under-siege\/","title":{"rendered":"Thames Water BBC documentary shows firm &#8216;under siege&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">A filmmaker who spent months documenting Thames Water said the utility company felt &#8220;under siege&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Barnaby Peel and his team were given exclusive access to staff, including chief executive Chris Weston, over six months for the BBC documentary Thames Water: Inside the Crisis.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Mr Peel said he felt &#8220;sympathy&#8221; for individual staff members, but can understand public anger over the company&#8217;s performance.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">A \u00a33bn rescue loan for the company is set to go ahead after an appeal against the deal <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c7vzq9436zdo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">was dismissed on Monday<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, Mr Peel said the troubled company was a &#8220;fascinating place to be&#8221; as staff dealt with issues surrounding increasing customer bills and protests over sewage flowing into rivers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;It was quite smelly at times \u2013 I have spent quite a lot of my life in sewage works over the last six months,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Mr Peel has worked on previous documentaries with subjects including London Zoo for ITV and the rise of Donald Trump for Netflix.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">He admitted some staff were &#8220;incredibly anxious&#8221; about the prospect of featuring in the two-part series.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;The company definitely is one that feels under siege, I think,&#8221; he added. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;People there &#8211; and it might sound extreme &#8211; do feel that the public has quite a high degree of hatred for them.&#8221;  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Thames Water serves about a quarter of the UK&#8217;s population, mostly across London and parts of southern England, and employs 8,000 people.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In the documentary, Mr Weston, who was appointed chief executive in January 2024, said he was surprised how &#8220;invasive&#8221; the water regulator Ofwat had become and how it &#8220;steers the running of the company&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Mr Weston told the programme: &#8220;They&#8217;re getting more and more interested and intrusive around dividends.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;It&#8217;s quite surprising and I think they have all the powers they need.
