In the year to March 2025, it was to 2.6%, down slightly from 2.8% the previous month.\" class=\"sc-4abb68ca-0 ldLcJe\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In May, the inflation figure for April will likely be pushed to around 3% due to increases in gas prices, electricity prices, and water charges, said Michael Saunders, senior advisor at Oxford Economics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The former member of the Bank of England&#8217;s interest rate setting Monetary Policy Committee told Radio 4&#8217;s Today Programme the effect of Trump&#8217;s trade wars will also be felt in exports and investment in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We may get a diversion of cheap exports which might have otherwise gone to the US, will start to come to Europe and the UK,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Perhaps not as high as the Bank of England had feared a few months ago, but the economy will be weaker, with exports and investment and consumer spending all hit and unemployment starting to rise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He added that another side-effect of Trump&#8217;s trade war is hitting global growth, which causes oil prices to fall, which will feed through to lower petrol prices here in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">&#8216;It&#8217;s getting higher and higher&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dFZIgd\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-4abb68ca-1 eOgpjw\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/bbcdotcom\/web\/20250409-091508-0ef9b7676-web-2.19.1-12\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-4abb68ca-0 itgEAh hide-when-no-script\"\/><img sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 50vw, (min-width: 1008px) 66vw, 96vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/240\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 240w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 320w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 480w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/640\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 640w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/800\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 800w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 1024w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1536\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp 1536w\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/24a5\/live\/b28d7010-1a8d-11f0-af6b-89e1d4cd3f2d.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Sonja Skelton smiling standing in her workshop\" class=\"sc-4abb68ca-0 ldLcJe\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Sonja Skelton says the biggest cost for her business is staffing &#8211; and that&#8217;s about to get higher with minimum wage increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The recent increase in National Insurance has cost her over \u00a360,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;And it&#8217;s getting higher and higher,&#8221; she says, but she adds she&#8217;s happy to pay as she says it will help to improve the UK&#8217;s infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Her firm, West Special Fasteners, makes nuts and bolts, and has been doing since 1999. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The firm has over 65 employees and supplies offshore defence and specialist construction firms with non-standard fasteners, made with stainless steel and exotic metals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to be a little bit more efficient, so we&#8217;re trying to improve all our processes, because that can help claw some of that money back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But, she adds, if she isn&#8217;t able to absorb extra costs, the prices of her products will have to go up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;So there&#8217;s a specialist material we call that&#8217;s called Hastelloy C-276. I&#8217;d probably say around five years ago, that might have been, say, \u00a330 per kilo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We&#8217;re now looking at around about \u00a350 per kilo. So, as you can tell, it&#8217;s a massive, massive increase&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">As her firm is a high energy user, the rising cost of energy has also &#8220;really impacted&#8221; her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">On top of that, she says that working in engineering, &#8220;you always have ups and downs, because it really depends what&#8217;s happening all over the world, and conflicts can have a knock-on effect on what we do&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">Interest rate cut<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">As inflation comes down, it could put pressure on the Bank of England to cut its key interest rate, currently 4.5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Vacancies at their lowest point in four years and economic pressure predicted from Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs may also encourage the Bank to cut when it meets next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But the Bank faces a dilemma, as wage growth remains strong and this would normally discourage a cut in rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Experts and analysts predict inflation to fall to near its 2% target by 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The drop in inflation will be welcome news to the government, said Lindsay James, investment strategist at Quilter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;With the jobs market weakening somewhat, and very real and present tariff threats still in play, any downward pressure on inflation will be hailed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She added the forecast for inflation &#8220;remains very uncertain&#8221; because of a &#8220;volatile&#8221; global economy, and rising National Insurance which she said will <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp816jrnynyo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">raise prices from April onwards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the drop was &#8220;encouraging&#8221; but that &#8220;there is more to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I know many families are still struggling with the cost of living and this is an anxious time because of a changing world,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, shadow chancellor Mel Stride says Reeves&#8217; &#8220;reckless union payouts, tax hikes and borrowing binge is driving up the cost of living&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He said inflation remains above the official target of 2% due to her choices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper said &#8220;those already struggling with the sky-high cost of living simply won&#8217;t be able to withstand another hammer blow to their pockets, such as from President Trump&#8217;s global trade war&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She urged the government to make trade deals with European and Commonwealth allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\"><i id=\"additional-reporting-by-adam-woods.\" class=\"sc-d16436d-0 fhKUCU\">Additional reporting by Adam Woods.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c4g2eyp79y3o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faarea Masud BBC Business reporter Getty Images Falling petrol prices drove UK inflation down by more than expected in the year to March.
