{"id":55330,"date":"2025-05-23T14:29:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T14:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/daily-telegraph-to-be-sold-to-us-firm-redbird\/"},"modified":"2025-05-23T14:29:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T14:29:42","slug":"daily-telegraph-to-be-sold-to-us-firm-redbird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/daily-telegraph-to-be-sold-to-us-firm-redbird\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Telegraph to be sold to US firm RedBird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">American buyout firm RedBird has agreed a deal to take control of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph after a two-year ownership vacuum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">RedBird Capital will buy the stake owned by Emirati royal Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Sultan al-Nahyan who had bankrolled an earlier bid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">That bid was rejected by the previous government, which passed a law preventing foreign governments owning British newspapers or news magazines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The current proposed deal will need regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Both Telegraph titles and the Spectator magazine were put up for auction by Lloyds Bank, who seized them from the Barclay family for non-payment of outstanding debts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In a bold but ultimately unsuccessful move, a consortium of RedBird and Sheikh Mansour&#8217;s IMI paid off the Barclay brothers&#8217; debts in full hoping to shortcut the auction process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, the fact that the consortium was almost entirely funded by IMI saw the government intervene and prevent it taking majority ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It is thought that IMI will retain a minority stake of less than 15% in the two papers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Meanwhile, the Spectator was sold to <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn8l35xl1l2o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">hedge fund billionaire Sir Paul Marshall<\/a> last year for \u00a3100m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The BBC understands the purchase price will see RedBird IMI get its money back in full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It brings to an end a two-year limbo period which the Telegraph staff found unsettling and left them concerned that sufficient investment and direction was lacking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">RedBird founder Gerry Cardinale told the BBC he has plans to expand the Telegraph&#8217;s reach and subscriber base in the US, believing there to be a gap in the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Among other investments, RedBird Capital owns the Italian football team AC Milan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c4gk8m1lrmlo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American buyout firm RedBird has agreed a deal to take control of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph after a two-year ownership vacuum.
