{"id":55975,"date":"2025-06-02T13:29:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T13:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/newport-supermarkets-to-be-charged-for-abandoned-trolleys\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T13:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T13:29:16","slug":"newport-supermarkets-to-be-charged-for-abandoned-trolleys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/newport-supermarkets-to-be-charged-for-abandoned-trolleys\/","title":{"rendered":"Newport supermarkets to be charged for abandoned trolleys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Supermarkets in Newport could be charged for trolleys that have been abandoned on public land. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Newport City Council say abandoned trolleys are a &#8220;growing problem&#8221; and cause antisocial behaviour and environmental damage, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/lnp\/ldrs\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The council hopes a new policy could curb the issue and give retailers a financial incentive to make sure trolleys stay on their property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The public will likely have a say on the proposals that could see companies pay \u00a3100, with trolleys returned to the supermarket.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Under proposals, the local authority would remove an abandoned trolley from council land or highways and keep it in storage for up to six weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It will then find and contact each trolley&#8217;s owner within seven days of its removal, notifying them of the seizure and making arrangements for its return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The proposed charge for this overall service would be set at \u00a3100 per trolley \u2013 lower than the \u00a3120 to \u00a3200 the council estimates each trolley costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In cases where the owner is unknown or where a trolley is not collected, after six weeks the council will take ownership of that trolley and will likely resell or otherwise dispose of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Some supermarkets have existing arrangements with a third-party organisation to collect reported abandoned trolleys, but the council argues &#8220;this process is far from sufficient&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Under the new proposals, the council&#8217;s powers would be limited to its own land and public highways, and would not include main rivers or other waterways under the management of agencies such as Natural Resources Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, in those cases the council would contact those agencies to request a trolley&#8217;s removal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The policy will also exclude private land, but the council has opened up the possibility of some collections if a landowner makes a request.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cq5476qyqd4o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supermarkets in Newport could be charged for trolleys that have been abandoned on public land.
