I thought it was the end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But the team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital &#8220;were amazing&#8221;, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Mr Tottoh had radiotherapy to treat the damage to his bones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He then had chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant and has been in remission since November 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 eOFjmw\">&#8216;Positive mindset&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Throughout, the support of family and friends has been invaluable, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It takes a small army to get you through this ordeal,&#8221; said Mr Tottoh, who is still on maintenance treatment to keep his cancer at bay for as long as possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;The most important thing now is having people in your corner, people who care, people who lift you up when you&#8217;re down. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;My family and closest friends have done that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Nearly five years on from his diagnosis, Mr Tottoh is now determined to make memories with his family and his grandson Theo, nine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;My mindset is really positive,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I will see my grandson go to university and get married &#8211; if that&#8217;s what he wants to do. I will see my kids fulfil their dreams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Right now, I&#8217;m in an amazing place and I&#8217;m on the path to living with myeloma for a very long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He said if anyone feels unsure about any symptoms they may have, they should visit the doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Nobody knows your body better than you, so own it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 eOFjmw\">Myeloma<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<ul class=\"sc-6f869981-0 fusmZA\">\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Myeloma is an incurable blood cancer that occurs in the bone marrow<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Despite being the third most common type of blood cancer, myeloma is difficult to detect as symptoms are often linked to general ageing or minor conditions<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">While it is incurable, myeloma is treatable in the majority of cases<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Treatment can lead to periods of remission but the cancer will inevitably come back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\"><i id=\"source-myeloma-uk\" class=\"sc-d16436d-0 fhKUCU\">Source Myeloma UK<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/czr85lmdxjlo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Stanley BBC News, Lancashire Handout Mel Tottoh was diagnosed with myeloma after months of rib and back pain A former footballer has told how he was in &#8220;complete shock&#8221; after being diagnosed with blood cancer &#8211; after first believing the pain was from a pulled muscle.
