Images of historical characters, starting with William Shakespeare, were first seen on the reverse side a decade later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">At times the choices have landed the Bank in hot water. The <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-23163064\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">absence of any women<\/a>, apart from Queen Elizabeth II, on notes in 2013 prompted a huge backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Now, the Bank is proposing that designs on the next series of notes could move on to a new theme. While notable historical figures remain an option, other possible subject matters suggested by the Bank include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-6f869981-0 fusmZA\">\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">architecture and landmarks, such as famous buildings or castles<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">arts, culture and sport, including food, film and novels<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">noteworthy events in history, which could include events or movements<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">innovation, such as technology or discoveries<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">nature, celebrating plants, animals or natural landscapes such as rivers or coastal scenes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The public are being <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/banknotes\/help-us-design-our-next-series-of-banknotes\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">invited to give their views.<\/a> They can also suggest their own themes, which may prompt plenty of jokes &#8211; <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-36064659\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Notey McNoteface will undoubtedly feature<\/a> &#8211; and debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Banknotes are more than just an important means of payment. The back of the vertically designed note combines butterflies, flora, Horseshoe Bay, and a boat passing beneath Somerset Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The Bank of England&#8217;s notes have been less dramatic, featuring abstract geometric designs, lions or Britannia in years gone by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The crop of historical characters on the current series of circulating notes, in ascending order of note value, are Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner and Alan Turing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">This public consultation relates to the Bank&#8217;s next series, which will also continue to include an image of the monarch.
