She is smiling at the camera.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><span class=\"sc-d1200759-2 gwFzuU\">Queen&#8217;s University Belfast<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-536eff7b-0 FPsqq\">Dr Kathy Ruddy is heading up the research based at Queen&#8217;s University Belfast<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;This form of &#8216;motor imagery&#8217; activates the same brain areas as real movement and it may help keep these body parts healthy and active after a stroke, even when actual movement isn&#8217;t yet possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The project is being funded by Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Dr Ruddy said by &#8220;incorporating different types of neural signals into brain-controlled games, the team can train human participants to modify specific aspects of their neurophysiological function&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Stroke survivors, carers and healthcare professionals are invited to come along to an event at Riddel Hall in Stranmillis on Thursday 7 August from 11:00 BST until 15:00 to find out more about the research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 eOFjmw\">How to identify a stroke<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The FAST acronym (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) is a test to quickly identify the three most common signs of stroke.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-6f869981-0 fusmZA\">\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Face weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms fully and keep them there?<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 huNRXw\">Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
