said Eimhear O&#8217;Neill who is studying for a PGCE in Irish medium education at St Mary&#8217;s University College Belfast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">All students who receive the bursaries are expected to teach in schools in Northern Ireland for at least two years after graduating, according to the Department of Education (DE).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The bursaries were announced by Education Minister Paul Givan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It is the first time such a scheme has been introduced in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Students taking a four-year undergraduate education degree in maths, and technology and design, will have their tuition fees paid for the duration of their course &#8211; about \u00a35,000 a year or \u00a320,000 in total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Those taking a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Irish medium education, maths, chemistry, physics, information technology or technology and design will have their fees paid and also receive a one year bursary of \u00a312,000 towards living costs &#8211; He has a navy blazer and pink tie. \" class=\"sc-86c96223-0 fHZDyi\"\/><span class=\"sc-86c96223-2 hqrvRC\">PA Media<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Givan told BBC News NI when he spoke to school principals they said they indicated a real challenge in trying to recruit specialist teachers in the subjects that we are now supporting&#8221; and it is difficult to recruit and &#8220;retain teachers&#8221; in these subjects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">He added in the private sector teachers can &#8220;earn significantly higher in terms of their potential earnings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why we have been seeking to address teachers&#8217; pay,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The education minister added that providing the bursary should make the subjects &#8220;attractive&#8221; and try to &#8220;incentivise young people&#8221; into them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;When you don&#8217;t have the teacher who specialises in the subject then you are not going to get the same quality of teaching that we need,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 fsBZby\">&#8216;Really important&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The shortage of Irish medium teachers at secondary level has been <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-47902370.amp\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted by the Irish medium sector<\/a> several times, despite the number of pupils in Irish medium education continuing to rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Eimhear O&#8217;Neill and Luke MacDaibheid are both studying for a PGCE in Irish medium education at St Mary&#8217;s University College Belfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Ms O&#8217;Neill says she thinks it is &#8220;really important&#8221; to encourage young people to follow down the route she has.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;There is a decline in Irish language teachers and it is really important that the funding is there to support the teachers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;I&#8217;m excited for it to start,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;More numbers will mean more students learning the language,&#8221; Mr MacDaibheid said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;It puts less stress on the DE to look for these teachers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp3qxpd029vo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Robbie MeredithEducation and arts correspondent, BBC News NI BBC Eimhear O&#8217;Neill and Luke MacDaibheid are both studying for a PGCE in Irish medium education at St Mary&#8217;s University College Belfast.
