He is bald and is wearing glasses\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/><span class=\"sc-5340b511-2 lha-dta\">BBC<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-536eff7b-0 jFVvLh\">County council leader Mick Barton has not spoken to journalists from the Nottingham Post and its online arm, Nottinghamshire Live, since August<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">A local newspaper has launched a legal challenge against a Reform UK council leader&#8217;s decision to refuse to speak to its reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Nottinghamshire County Council leader Mick Barton has not spoken to journalists from the Nottingham Post and its online arm, Nottinghamshire Live, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cger45p0lv0o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">since August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Now law firm CMS LLP has served the council with a legal letter on behalf of Reach, the organisation that runs the publisher, calling for the ban to be withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It comes after Barton lifted the ban for the three BBC-funded Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) journalists, who work out of the publication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The context and scope of the ban has been unclear since it was introduced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 fsBZby\">&#8216;Irrationality&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">According to the Post, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/news\/local-news\/reform-uk-leader-advising-councillors-10441387\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">an article about local government reorganisation, written<\/a> by its agenda editor Oliver Pridmore, prompted the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The council previously told the BBC the ban barred Barton and his party&#8217;s councillors from speaking to the Post and the LDRS reporters &#8220;with immediate effect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The authority also stopped sending press releases to the publication and inviting them to council events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">But Barton <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cqxgxzzjx3zo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">later clarified the ban only applied<\/a> to press releases and him personally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">At the time, senior editor Natalie Fahy said she was &#8220;very concerned&#8221; by the &#8220;unprecedented ban&#8221;. In response, Barton said the party would not &#8220;allow misinformation to shape the narrative of our governance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">On Tuesday, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/news\/local-news\/nottinghamshire-live-launches-legal-challenge-10536799\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">Post said the legal letter<\/a> called for the ban to be withdrawn in full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It added the Post believed the decision to issue the ban was without legal basis &#8220;due to its irrationality&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The Post believes the ban is in breach of local government regulations, Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights &#8211; in relation to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/human-rights\/human-rights-act\/article-10-freedom-expression\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">freedom of expression<\/a> &#8211; including deputy Reform leader <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/cg7j79djexxt\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Tice<\/a> and leader <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgknyjkvmzlo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigel Farage<\/a> &#8211;
