{"id":64813,"date":"2025-11-28T01:31:37","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T01:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/schools-told-to-continue-providing-re-based-on-holy-scriptures\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T01:31:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T01:31:39","slug":"schools-told-to-continue-providing-re-based-on-holy-scriptures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/schools-told-to-continue-providing-re-based-on-holy-scriptures\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools told to continue providing RE based on &#8216;holy scriptures&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Schools should continue to provide Religious Education (RE) based on the &#8220;holy scriptures&#8221;, according to the Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">They are also legally required to hold collective worship like assemblies each day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Education Minister Paul Givan has provided the guidance in a letter to school principals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">His letter is in response to a <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx207245jx2o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">UK Supreme Court judgement<\/a> that the Christian focused RE taught in Northern Ireland was unlawful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Givan said in his letter that the judgement was complex and could not be ignored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He said that it had ruled RE had not been taught in an &#8220;objective, critical and pluralist manner, and that collective worship was similarly not conveyed in such a way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But he said that the judgement had not struck down existing legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Schools will note, therefore, that both Religious Education and collective worship continue to be a legal requirement,&#8221; Givan wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He also said the judgement recognised that Christianity is the main religion in Northern Ireland, and the greater part of RE would still focus on knowledge of Christianity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But he said the RE syllabus would be reformed and he would set out how soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The area of collective worship requires further consideration,&#8221; the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;While parents have the right to withdraw their child, the Supreme Court found that current arrangements did not meet legal requirements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Givan&#8217;s letter stated that he would provide further comprehensive and &#8220;legally sound&#8221; guidance to schools in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But it also said the department had &#8220;requested further legal advice to understand the full implications of the judgment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crk70y5pnzro?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Schools should continue to provide Religious Education (RE) based on the &#8220;holy scriptures&#8221;, according to the Department of Education.
