the government&#8217;s official forecaster &#8211; predicted that the UK&#8217;s economy would expand by 1.5% this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">However, it lowered its growth estimates to 1.4% in 2026 and 1.5% in all of the following four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">In October, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn092p27xn0o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted<\/a> the UK would grow by 1.3% this year, which it said would make it the second-fastest growing major economy in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 gXmhTb\">How does GDP affect me?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">If GDP is going up steadily, people pay more in tax because they&#8217;re earning and spending more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This means more money for the government, which it can choose to spend on public services, such as schools, police and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">When the economy shrinks and a country goes into recession, these things can go into reverse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Governments tend to get less money in tax, which means they may decide to freeze or cut public spending, or put taxes up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">In 2020, the Covid pandemic caused the most severe UK recession for more than 300 years, which forced the government to borrow hundreds of billions of pounds to support the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 gXmhTb\">How is GDP measured?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">GDP can be measured in three ways:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-6f869981-0 diUlgm\">\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 cRgahm\"><b id=\"output:\" class=\"sc-d16436d-0 gnUCoQ\">Output:<\/b> The total value of the goods and services produced by all sectors of the economy &#8211; agriculture, manufacturing, energy, construction, the service sector and government<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-734a601e-0 cRgahm\"><b id=\"expenditure:\" class=\"sc-d16436d-0 gnUCoQ\">Expenditure:<\/b> The value of goods and services bought by households and by government, investment in machinery and buildings &#8211;
