{"id":79906,"date":"2026-07-13T11:56:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/rare-earls-barton-floodplain-meadow-given-to-wildlife-trust\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T11:56:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:56:43","slug":"rare-earls-barton-floodplain-meadow-given-to-wildlife-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kede.com.br\/news\/rare-earls-barton-floodplain-meadow-given-to-wildlife-trust\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare Earls Barton floodplain meadow given to wildlife trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A rare floodplain meadow is to be restored into a wildflower-rich habitat after it was donated to a conservation charity.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">White Mills Meadow is on the banks of the River Nene at Earls Barton, near Northampton, and it was given to the trust by the Thompson family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The six hectare (15-acre) site will become the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire &amp; Northamptonshire&#8217;s 34th reserve in Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Conservation manager Matt Johnson said these meadows were &#8220;one of the rarest habitats in England&#8221; with &#8220;only around 2,000 hectares (4,242 acres) remaining&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;d like to say a big thank you to the Thompson family \u2013 we are very grateful for their generosity and for entrusting us with the care of this land,&#8221; Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We will now restore it by reintroducing hay cuts and conservation grazing livestock will be brought on site to help manage it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Floodplain meadows were once a traditional part of the countryside, providing food for grazing animals and storing rain water in the winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They also produce nectar-rich native flowers, which can support hundreds of species of insects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cql6x43wv1no\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">The conservation charity unveiled its plan<\/a> to reverse biodiversity loss across its three counties in March 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to the wildlife trust, there has been a 19% decline in wildlife in the UK since 1970 and nearly one in six species is threatened with extinction from Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Do you have a story suggestion for Northamptonshire?
