The victory in Warsaw is Iga Swiatek’s fourth title this season

Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Germany’s Alexander Zverev claimed titles at their home opens on Sunday.

Women’s world number one Swiatek beat Germany’s Laura Siegemund 6-0 6-1 in Warsaw to win the Poland Open.

Meanwhile, Zverev defeated Serbia’s Laslo Djere 7-5 6-3 in the final of the Hamburg Open.

Swiatek only completed her semi-final earlier in the day after play was suspended on Saturday night because of bad light.

The 22-year-old was 6-1 5-5 up against Yanina Wickmayer at the time, and she eventually claimed a 6-1 7-6 (8-6) victory over the Belgian when the match was resumed.

She raced through the championship match against Siegemund in just 68 minutes without facing a single break point.

“It’s not easy to play in Warsaw, but I’m so happy that we could manage and do everything we could today, after a pretty tiring day yesterday,” said Swiatek, who didn’t drop a set throughout the tournament.

“I wanted to put it all in and go for it. I’m pretty happy that I did.”

It is a fourth title for the Pole this season, having won in Doha and Stuttgart before picking up her third French Open title at Roland Garros in June.

‘It was incredibly emotional’

Zverev, 15th in the men’s singles rankings, also raced through his final, wrapping up a straight-set win in just under two hours for his first title since the 2021 ATP Finals.

“It’s almost like a first title again,” said Zverev.

“It’s such a long time, 18 months, and I’m just super happy right now.”

The 26-year-old becomes the first German since Michael Stich in 1993 to win on the Hamburg clay.

“At the end of the day, this is my home, this is where I grew up, and this where I started playing tennis,” Zverev added.

“It was incredible for me, incredibly emotional. I can’t describe it in words, I’m just super happy right now.”

Watson and Wickmayer win doubles title

Heather Watson
The victory is Watson’s first WTA doubles title since 2018

After losing her semi-final to Swiatek in Warsaw, Wickmayer joined forces with Great Britain’s Heather Watson to win the women’s doubles.

They denied Polish duo Weronika Falkowska and Katarzyna Piter from lifting the trophy in front of a home crowd after winning 6-4 6-4.

Wickmayer had defeated Watson in the singles on Saturday, but the pair saved six of the seven break points they faced and converted three of their own to take the doubles title.

It is Watson’s fifth career WTA doubles triumph, while it is Wickmayer’s fourth doubles title.
