Charlie Cassell took an astonishing 7-21 on his debut as Scotland swept to an eight-wicket win over Oman in World Cup League 2.

Bowling at his home Forfarshire ground at Forthill, the 25-year-old struck with his first two balls, going on to complete a three-wicket maiden over.

The fast bowler then added another four wickets as Oman were left reeling at 91 all out.

Cassell’s remarkable figures from just 5.4 overs are the best from any debut bowler in a one-day international and rank seventh in the all-time list.

The previous record for a debutant was 6-16 from South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada against Bangladesh in 2015, while Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas is the only bowler to manage eight wickets in an ODI innings, back in 2001.

Cassell was added to the Scotland squad last week as a replacement for Chris Sole, who was unavailable for personal reasons.

And the Scots-born, Australia-raised player took full advantage, ripping through the visiting line-up.

“It’s a but surreal,” he said. “You wake up hoping to get one or two on your debut, you don’t expect to get seven!

“You don’t feel too under pressure with the boys, they just want you to enjoy your cricket.

“I felt very relaxed, just hoping to find the right spot, and today was just one of those days.”

Scotland, denied by the rain against the same opponents six days ago, made short work of chasing down a meagre total to add to their victory over Namibia on Saturday.

Opener George Munsey made a rapid 23, with Brandon McMullen and captain Richie Berrington not out on 37 and 24 respectively to get the job done on 95-2 in the 18th over.

Defending champions Scotland finish off this round of home games against Namibia on Wednesday at the same venue.
