World Sevens Football are in talks with leading clubs about a new seven-a-side women’s football series that is scheduled to start in May.

Games in the new “revolutionary grand slam series” will be played on a field half the size of a typical football pitch and involve two 15-minute halves, with extra time for tie-breakers.

World Sevens Football (W7F) are in talks with clubs, including sides from the Women’s Super League in England, but have not yet confirmed which teams will be involved.

The first event is scheduled to take place from 21-23 May in Estoril, Portugal and will be broadcast live by streaming platform DAZN.

However, the two clubs competing in the Women’s Champions League final in Lisbon on 24 May will not be involved in the first edition.

The series, which has a $5m (£3.85m) prize pool per event, is backed by US-based philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy, co-owner of NWSL club Gotham FC.

“World Sevens Football is designed to elevate the women’s game, providing players with a powerful new platform to showcase their talent, grow their personal brands, and provide economic opportunity in a way that truly reflects their value,” said Mackesy, who is also a minority shareholder in Chelsea’s women’s team.

It is understood W7F will have a wider pool of teams from which to choose for each event, with future tournaments planned across the United States, Mexico, Asia and Europe.

Organisers said they are putting players at “the heart of the game” by developing an player advisory council which is being led by former United States winger Tobin Heath and includes ex-England defender Anita Asante.

“We are building World Sevens Football with the player at the centre of everything we do,” added Asante.

“This competition gives another stage where players can shine while offering a great, potentially lucrative opportunity. It’s football, but faster, bolder, and made for the future.”
