Diamond League: Amy Hunt pipped to first place in Lausanne 200m event

Amy Hunt followed up her extraordinary week at the European Championships with a second-place finish in the women’s 200m at the Diamond League in Lausanne.

The Briton crossed the finish line in 22.32 seconds, edging Nigerian Favour Ofili in a photo finish.

American Kayla White won the race in 22.18 as former world champion Shericka Jackson pulled up on the bend with a leg injury and two-time Diamond League champion Brittany Brown did not start.

Hunt travelled to Switzerland on the back of winning four gold medals at the European Championships in Birmingham last week.

She took gold in the 100m, 200m, women’s 4x100m relay and mixed 4x100m relay – becoming the first athlete to win four gold medals in a single edition of the European Championships.

Hunt told BBC Sport: “That was so much fun. I expected to come in here a lot more tired, when I did my pre-meet yesterday I was pretty stiff and it took a while to get my big legs moving.

“I knew it was going to be a really competitive race with some incredible ladies, so I was trying to make my moves in the first half and see if my strength could carry me.

“I honestly really surprised myself, it was such a happy and pleasant surprise post-Europeans and after a lot of travel. I love performing, I love coming out here for a crowd, they really lifted me. It’s a magical experience.

“This season has taught me that it really doesn’t have to be perfect. There have been so many times when I’ve been crying, screaming, really down, but this year has shown me that things can still work out in the end.”

Fellow British sprinter Zharnel Hughes was unable to replicate the European silver medal he won last week as he finished fifth in the men’s 200m.

Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo took first place in 19.87, with Commonwealth champion Sinesipho Dambile second in 19.98.

Switzerland’s newly crowned 800m European champion Audrey Werro held off a late push from a fast-finishing Femke Broeders-Bol to take first place on home soil in a meeting record time of 1 minute and 55.33 seconds.

Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson did not compete in Lausanne, but will return in Zurich to face Werro and Broeders-Bol.

The next Diamond League meeting is in Silesia, Poland, on Sunday 23 August followed by Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday 27 August.

The final meet of the season will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on the weekend of 4 and 5 September.
