Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones has died aged 40.

Jones spent eight seasons in the NFL and played a key role as the Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.

In helping Baltimore to that victory over the San Francisco 49ers, he set a number of records.

His 108-yard kick-off return for a touchdown is the longest in Super Bowl history, and the longest play in the showpiece game.

Jones was also the first player to catch a touchdown and score on a return in the same Super Bowl.

An NFL Players Association statement, released on behalf of his family, said he “passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana”.

Drafted in the third round in 2007, Jones played for the Houston Texans until 2011 when he joined the Ravens.

After three seasons in Baltimore, where he was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2012, he had spells at the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2017.

“Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving team-mates and people I’ve ever been around,” former Texans team-mate JJ Watt wrote on X.

“Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones.”

Torrey Smith, who played with Jones in Baltimore, wrote on X: “My brother! I thank God for the memories and your impact on this world.

“You were 1 of 1! Your play on the field and jokes will live on forever! We have Momma Jones a Lil Coby’s back for life! This one hurt me man! We are going to miss you! Love you bro!”

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, also on X, added: “Na bra no way. RIP LEGEND.”
