Former world 1500m champion Jake Wightman looks to prove he is over last year’s injury problems as he starts his 2025 season by testing himself over 3,000m in Glasgow on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Scot, who took the world crown at the shorter distance in 2022 but had to withdraw from last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, is heading north from his Manchester base to compete in the Scottish 3,000m Championships at Emirates Arena.

The Glasgow Athletics Association’s Miler Meet combines The New Year Bash, with high jump, long jump, shot put, triple jump and pole vault competitions, and a series of 800m and 3,000m races from 14:00 GMT.

Men’s and women’s races – three 800m and 11 at 3,000m – will take place at different levels until Wightman goes for the title in the top-race finale at around 16:40.

Among his opponents in the main men’s race will be fellow Great Britain international Callum Elson, the Englishman’s Cambridge & Coleridge team-mate Thomas Bridger, and Morpeth’s James Young.

The women’s title is liable to be contested by Edinburgh AC’s Elsa Palmer, Lasswade’s Sarah Tait, Edinburgh University Hare & Hounds’ Sarah Calvert and Cambuslang Harriers’ Stefanie Tucker.

The 800m races feature Scotland internationals Hannah Cameron, of Aberdeen AAC, and Jill Cherry, of Victoria Park City of Glasgow.
