Joaquin Niemann beat Sergio Garcia on a dramatic fourth play-off hole that took place in near darkness to win the LIV Golf Mayakoba title in Mexico.

The Chilean had the chance to win in regulation but missed a birdie putt at the 18th to send it to a play-off.

Both players hit par on the par-four 18th three times, before Niemann birdied at the fourth attempt.

“On the practice grounds I saw myself making that last putt to win, so it’s freaking awesome,” Niemann said.

The players had been offered the chance to play the fourth play-off hole on Monday, but both agreed to continue despite the rapidly fading light.

“At the first play-off hole I didn’t think it was going to get too dark,” Niemann added.

“I thought it was going to take a little bit [longer]. You never know what’s going to happen, but I was expecting to go as fast as I could.

“I just told myself to give myself a chance and ended up hitting a good shot and making that putt, which was awesome.”

Spain’s Jon Rahm narrowly missed out on making it a three-way play-off on his LIV Golf debut after a bogey-bogey finish meant he finished third on 10 under, two shots behind Niemann and compatriot Garcia.

Another LIV debutant, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, finished tied for eighth on seven under.

The newly formed team Legion XIII, comprising Hatton, Rahm, Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent and American Caleb Surratt, took the team title on 24 under for the week – four shots ahead of Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC.
