US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz is seeking a 10th tour title

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek both moved into the last 16 at the Madrid Open with straight-set victories.

Spanish defending champion Alcaraz, who turns 20 on Friday, beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-2 7-5 in the men’s event.

He will face two-time champion Alexander Zverev of Germany for a place in the quarter-finals.

World number one Swiatek continued her run in the women’s competition with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Bernarda Pera.

She plays Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round after the Russian defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng 5-7 6-4 6-2.

Alcaraz was briefly troubled when 31-year-old Dimitrov broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set but the Spaniard wrapped up victory in 90 minutes, making just four unforced errors.

The world number two swept past Zverev in the 2022 Madrid final for the loss of just four games, but then lost to the German in the French Open quarter-finals.

On Sunday, Zverev needed just 56 minutes to dispose of France’s Hugo Grenier 6-1 6-0 including six breaks of serve and 26 winners.

“With Carlos it will be a match-up people will look forward to,” said 16th-ranked Zverev.

‘Tricky’ triumph for Swiatek

Swiatek, 21, overcame an early break of serve to see off American 28th seed Pera in just 75 minutes.

The three-time Grand Slam winner, who will defend her French Open crown next month, returned from a rib injury to win her 13th career title in Stuttgart last week.

“I wouldn’t say it was easy, every match is tricky here,” said Swiatek, who lost her serve to love to go 2-1 down in the opening set.

She overcame that early wobble to win the next four games before closing out the set, continuing a remarkable run that has seen her lose just one opening set in 45 matches on clay in WTA tournaments.

The barrage continued in the second set, as Swiatek won the first two games and went a decisive double-break up at 4-1 before serving out for the match.

Also progressing to the fourth round on Sunday was world number three Jessica Pegula, 29, who clinched a gruelling 6-4 7-6 (7-2) victory over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Pegula, who lost to Ons Jabeur in last year’s Madrid final, will face Italy’s Martina Trevisan on Monday for a quarter-final spot.
