Ireland’s Nathan Wiffen swam a personal best time of 14:32.65 as he finished ninth in the 1500m freestyle on his World Championships debut in Budapest.
Wiffen shaved over six seconds off his previous best of 14:38.75 as he finished sixth in his heat and ninth overall.
Twin brother of Olympic gold and bronze medallist Daniel, Nathan will return to the pool on Thursday for the 400m freestyle heats.
Ireland’s Ellen Walshe was also in action and set a number of new personal records.
She finished fifth place in the 200m individual medley with a new record of 2:05.52.
In the same race USA’s Kate Douglass set a new world record to win the final in 2:01.63.
Walshe also finished 14th overall in the semi-finals of the 50m butterfly with a new record of 25.45 and is back in action on Thursday in the 100m individual medley.
However, it was a disappointing day for Olympian Danielle Hill, as she failed to progress past the heats of the women’s 100m backstroke, finishing 19th overall.
She returns to the pool on Wednesday in the 100m freestyle.
